CUBA: ISLAND MUSICS
From the Hawaiian lounge exotica of Martin Denny to South Pacific’s Bali Ha’i, the music of Island cultures has offered up fanciful images of cool breezes, calm beaches and laid back island life.
But as Kevin Dawe notes in his new book on Island Musics: “the music industry has a long record of appropriating… and using islands as the basis for construction of a Shangri-La in sound.â€
But is there more to island music?Ìý What does the music of Jamaica, Madagascar, Papua New Guinea, Ibiza or Trinidad tell us about the islands themselves and their inhabitants?
Laurie Taylor is joined by ethno-musicologist, DrÌýJan Fairley to look at the real links between music, popular culture and life in one particular island culture: Cuba.
They examine the Buena Vista phenomenon of the late 1990s, as well as the emergence of a musical form called timba, that embraces a gamut of Cuban cultural attitudes to tourism, religion and everyday life.
