CEMETERIES AS ETHNIC HOMELANDS
Leonie Kellaher is co-author of a new book The Secret Cemetery which looks at the meanings of our present day cemeteries and the diverse range of memorial practice within London's cemeteries of the Jewish, Greek Orthodox, Muslim, Roman Catholic and Anglican communities.
Laurie Taylor discusses with Leonie Kellaher the way in which cemeteries are sites for the reconstitution of family, self and group by enabling those communities which are separated through migration to forge new connections with their place of origin and how rituals surrounding death teach younger members of families about their culture of origin.
CHANGING PERCEPTION OF SKILL
Policy makers suggest that skills are vital ingredients for national economic prosperity. But what does it mean to have a skills? In the past skills were equated with technical know-how or manual dexterity but they now seem to include personal characteristics, behaviours and attitudes.
Has the concept of skill become so broad that to speak of it is almost meaningless? If so, what are the implications for contemporary education and training and- will it bring about thefurther marginalisation of theoretical knowledge?
