Laurie Taylor delves into the mysteries of the beauty salon with ethnographer and social scientist Dr Paula Black, from the University of Sussex, who has just published The Beauty Industry: Gender, Culture, Pleasure.
Paula Black spoke to both therapists and clients to find out why people go to salons and what kind of treatments they have.Ìý She discovered that their reasons for frequenting salons go far beyond simple vanity.
