The limits of bridge building:
Laurie Taylor hears about the limits of bridge building.Ìý Nine years ago this month the Stari Most – Mostar’s beautiful and iconic Old Bridge finally succumbed to months of Serbian shelling and Croatian artillery.Ìý The pictures of its final collapse into the river seemed to symbolise for many the end of the old unified and multi-ethnic Bosnia.
In the current climate, where destructive war follows destructive war, thinking about the ways and means of post-war reconstruction has never been more important.Ìý And in Bosnia rebuilding the old bridge has been seen by virtually every player in Bosnia’s story as a priority.
,Ìýwriter and broadcaster and student of the West’s interest in putting the world to rights visited Bosnia earlier this year to investigate the hope invested in rebuilding the bridge.Ìý This afternoon he explains his concern that rebuilding a bridge, however beautiful, only means rebuilding a bridge.Ìý It does not symbolise reconciliation between Mostar’s fractured communities who show few signs of having either forgiven or forgotten.
