ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS – ROBERT KING MERTON
Laurie Taylor and Professor of pay tribute to Robert King Merton, one of the twentieth century’s great sociologists, who died last month.
Merton was a man whose ideas ranged widely across all manner of social problems.Ìý In so doing, he popularised phrases like ‘self-fulfilling prophecy’, inadvertently laid the foundation stones for today’s all-pervasive focus groups and theorised on the mass media’s potential development as a tool of propaganda.
