Katy Hickman visits New College in Leicester . This school was created seven years ago in 1999 following the amalgamation of three schools, two of which were already in special measures and the third which was deemed to have serious weaknesses. Since its creation this supposed super school has seen 8 heads come and go, a huge turn-over of staff, record numbers of truancy and pupils leaving without any GCSEs. And the school itself has been in special measures since December 2003. Katy Hickman went to look back at how New College started, what went wrong and what lessons can be learnt:
Not school
Notschool.net is designed for young people who have been out of school for at least a year whether because of illness, pregnancy, bullying, phobia, disaffection or exclusion. The aim is to reintroduce them to learning and restore their self-confidence. 17 local authorities have turned to Notschool and over 1500 children have been through Notschool's virtual doors. The founder, Professor Stephen Heppell, talks to Libby in the studio
