Libby Purves
This week's programme takes a look at Higher Education and the arguments for and against widening participation.

WHAT EVERY PARENT SHOULD KNOW BEFORE THEIR CHILD GOES TO UNIVERSITY
Jane Bidder a journalist for over twenty five years, has just published a self-help book for parents whose children are aiming to study at university. Libby Purves asks Jane Bidder how parents can benefit from reading her new book.

EDUCATION IN SCOTLAND
Jenny Duncan, Women's Officer at the National Union of Students in Scotland, discusses the pastoral care for new students and the access to higher education in Scotland.

HIGHER EDUCATION
Geoff Layer is Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bradford University and editor of a new book called Closing the Equity Gap - The impact of widening participation strategies in the UK and the USA. He tells Libby Purves that higher education is still not accessible to some sections of society and that there needs to be institutional change to get more people from lower socio-economic groups into the system.

CAMBRIDGE SUMMER SCHOOL
Sue Long, Further Education Colleges Liaison Officer in the Cambridge University Admissions Office talks about the idea behind the summer school. Libby also hears from Karon Dahner how she has benefited from attending the course at last year's summer school.
