They're not the only ones to take Pete Ham and Tom Evans' song to heart: over 180 artists have covered the song. It was written in 1969 by the Swansea band after Ham and Evans had each written a song they weren't happy with.

By combining the two songs, the band arrived at something more than the sum of its parts. But they never saw the potential and the song was never released as a single; instead it stayed on the No Dice album.

Harry Nilsson, however, did realise its potential and took it to number one both in the UK and US in 1972. Mariah Carey, 22 years later, also took it to number one in the UK.

While Carey's version is the basis for a million karaoke wannabes, the Badfinger original was a rawer affair, and seems to resonate with tragic foreboding as both Ham and Evans later committed suicide.
