Just had a quick look at tonight's schedules and it seems like the Â鶹Éç has decided not to mark the occasion at all. Bit disappointing really!
Anyhoo, happy Women's Day to all the fellow POV ladies, girls, daughters, mothers, sisters, thinkers, workers, lovers, and fighters... keep on keeping on
Mrs Johnnymol would have been there but she's cooking, ironing and doing the washing up
But don't tell her I told you
On the contrary, Radio 3 is devoted entirely to music by female composers, and to female performers.
Well, I was talking about TV schedules... but nice to see this important day hasn't been completely forgotten by Auntie Beeb.
When is it "International Men's Day" ?
When is it "International Men's Day" ?Ìý Every day of the year, except 8 March

Poldark Â鶹Éç1 9pm, scheduled to start on international wimmings day, coincidence?

Barbara Strozzi seems to have been quite a woman!
' course she was. She was female, Italian and into music. Perfection

It should be called 'International white middle class women's day'.

Plenty of events for non white women going on around were I live.
Just go and get on with watching telly.
It should be called 'International white middle class women's day'.Ìý
I've been to a few Women Of The World Festival's events this week, and I must admit although some of the most interesting debates and workshops had a nicely mixed, diverse nature, too many of the participants (on both sides of the 'lectern') were indeed white and middle class. And as a white, middle class female I'll be the first to admit feeling a tad uncomfortable about that. Still a lot of work to be done on this front.
'Feminists' are really annoying.
Why? Too massive a reminder of your own inadequacies, Musk?
The self-righteousness, the male-bashing, the projection, the snippy sense of entitlement.
If you really think that's what feminism is about then I think you've just answered the above question in the positive
And as a white, middle class female I'll be the first to admit feeling a tad uncomfortable about that. Ìý
Seems rather how I feel about the very idea of joining the W.I Turner....not that I've been asked... the very thought is frankly not me...too independent !
Just a thought.. there is another womans' day surely? Mother's Day 15th (next Sunday) ?
Just for the record, I am a feminist, but think the edges should be softened. A lot of power lies within a kid glove....

This is the problem, isn't it, that being a 'feminist' inevitably means one has to be a 'democrat' and even a 'socialist'. (But not necessarily a lesbian!) (actually, I'd argue that 'separatists' are undemocratic towards men.)
But 'feminists' who simply want to get to the top of the greasy pole up there with all the blokes, while some nice female immigrant lady does all their chores at home, aren't on either, to my mind.
If feminism is all about equality then most women are NOT feminists.
Many years ago I went to Iceland on holiday, and one day we went on a coach trip on a road marked on the map as only passable in summer by vehicles with four-wheel drive. Sure enough, the coach got stuck in a ford. The men were asked to get out and pull the coach with a rope, while the women were given the option of getting out to make the coach lighter, or staying on board. Every single one of them stayed on board. So whatever most women want it is most definitely not equality!
Manpain!

Manpain!Ìý Strange you make light of the male perspective and yet do not highlight the sexism of allowing the women to stay on the coach.
I don't make light of the male perspective, I made light of the *example* used - which forgive me for being so blunt - is so inappropriate in the context of a gender equality debate as to be offensive.

Seriously? You're comparing pay inequality, workplace discrimination, the fact that women still constitute the vast majority of victims of domestic and sexual violence, the under-representation in politics, business, and other decision-making structures, and so on and so forth, with men having to push a broken down coach and women not helping? I'll go and fetch my violin, shall I?

Wanna hear my position?
Why are some men so threatened whenever feminism is mentioned that they feel an immediate need to go on the attack by being dismissive of the word if ideas, or stating an example that they think ... I don't know, somehow proves there is equality between the sexes. These men always sound like they're whining a bit - which is why a Turner mentioned manpain - a common deflection in these discussions.
At what point did the Â鶹Éç News channel think it was appropriate to mark International Women's Day using a graphic of a pair of bright pink high heels?
It should be called 'International white middle class women's day'.Ìý Could I ask why you said that? It's a genuine question, by the way.

Oh. Didn't realise this was simply for that. Naïve me thought it a discussion about IWD.
Perhaps better Turner to loosen up a little? Surely there are more important issues than whether women alighted from a bus? This a now ageing argument which might last forever, as indeed it always has.

I'm not making any comparisons - you're doing that not me. For the record I believe that women should be given equal opportunities but on merit not gender. Alex Crawford who is a reporter on Sky News has won numerous awards for her body of work she didn't get them just because she was female.
Hilary Clinton may well be the next President of the USA but is she being elected on gender or merit?
As to the women on the bus I'd like to think they were more Alex Crawford and not willing to be seen as weak compared to men.

Mary Anne Hobbs, Cerys Matthews and Tom Robinson had programmes relating to International Women's Day on 6 Music.

'Loosen up a little'? Bonny, read the posts in this thread again: it wasn't me that started discussing feminism and gender equality issues - it was others, and funnily enough all men. One after another they piled on in this thread with bitter accusations, insults and recriminations.
All I wanted this thread to be was a celebration of women, on this very important day - but sadly it wasn't to be. Wish I'd never bothered.

Yes, it is shame (nothing on tv to recognise).
Anyway, thanks for posting happy Women's Day! (I'm glad you bothered).
Thank you
I don't make light of the male perspective, I made light of the *example* used - which forgive me for being so blunt - is so inappropriate in the context of a gender equality debate as to be offensive.Ìý
My example asks a key question about women's attitudes to equality, so it is not inappropriate, and I do not see how you can be offended by it. And I was not complaining, and I am not saying that what happened is important in itself. It asks if women really do want to be treated as equals, or are they like the women on the bus, who apparently want to be placed on a pedestal. So far everybody seems to be evading the question.
So, perhaps you can tell us what the feminist attitude is to the women on the bus - is that how feminists should behave?

Radio 3 has been full of it all day. And mostly second-rate stuff too !!!!
I'm glad you did too! Thank you.
Just ignore the sexists. It's just the usual suspects doing their usual dance.
Happy IWD! Hope we all have many more.

You know what? I really don't need to explain things further - if you still don't get why your post was so inappropriate after everything else said in this thread then I really can't help you. I really don't need this on top of the misery of working on a Sunday, so carry on if you want, or don't - I really don't care

What I'm getting from your post is that you think feminism is not about equality, and you are using a singular example to clumsily try and demonstrate this, when all you need to do to learn about feminism is use your favourite search engine.
Cricket, sweetheart, just pretend he's not there. He's a usual suspect, just stick a lampshade on him.

That is not what I think, and I don't see why you got that impression.. What I think is that most women do not want to be treated as equals, they want to be put on a pedestal. Why else would the women on the bus do nothing to help? Would you expect a feminist to get off the bus to help? And please give me as straight answer instead of evasively pointing to Google.
Oh give over Eamonn. We've already answered. Stop being so silly.
I've only got time to pop in for a wee sec, Turner

This is the last time I’m going to respond to you, because miranda’s right: this is a waste of time.
I have answered all your points in my first reply.
And it’s not up to women to get you up to speed on feminism. There’s plenty of Feminism 101s out there and debates you can read. The onus is on you to find out what you need to know so you can ask intelligent and pertinent questions – ones that have not been dealt with ad nauseum over the years.
And, on topic:
I wonder...does the op believe that the bbc should celebrate or commemorate every politically inspired day...every year..
I'm sure the op realises that there are many such days like this throughout the year...in fact I wouldn't be surprised if every day has a cause ascribed to it...
Does she really want the Â鶹Éç to be flooded every day of the year with such events...
Or does she only want the Â鶹Éç to celebrate those that she personally feels strongly about...
Does she not also believe that having such a day is as sexist as others on this thread have been accused of being..
And here's another one being silly! LOL! But as it's you, Wolfie, I'll assume you're doing it for fun.
