England spinner Jack Leach did a wide-ranging interview on Â鶹Éç Radio 5 Sports Extra during the innings break in the men's Hundred match between Birmingham Phoenix and Welsh Fire.

He spoke about a number of things, including the stress fracture that ruled him out of the Ashes, his chances of being fit for the tour of India and writing a poem to read to his team-mates after the Ashes...

Leach on his injury: "It was probably a couple of weeks before, in my last game for Somerset, that I felt a little bit of stiffness in my back – no real pain but just stiff and I thought it was just me worrying about my fitness before a big series.

"In the lead-up to the Ireland game, in training I was still a bit stiff and as soon as I bowled in the game it turned to really sharp pain in my right-hand side and I knew that it wasn’t good.

"I tried to put on a brave face for the rest of that game, my inner Ben Stokes, not show any pain and got a scan at the end of the game. It confirmed that it was a stress fracture so I was obviously gutted to miss the series."

Leach on his recovery: "It wasn’t a complete fracture through the bone, it was a partial fracture so that’s good news and they feel like it will heal alright on its own. I’ve had a fracture before in that same bone, a different part of the bone, when I was younger.

"I haven’t asked too many questions as to why it has happened, I’ve focused on what I can do better moving forward in terms of looking after myself and my body to be able to bowl all the overs that I want to bowl for England.

"Already I’ve learnt so much from the rehab stuff, things I will take forward and can help prolong my career. It’s made me even more motivated and I want to play a lot more for England."

Leach on captain Stokes: "Over the last year, the thing that has been more is the number of overs that Stokesy has got me to bowl. He was probably looking towards the Ashes and wanting me to experience bowling in all different situations.

"He talked to me about not just bowling when it’s spinning and challenging me in other series in the lead up to the Ashes, probably knowing that he wasn’t going to bowl too many overs.

"I really enjoyed that and learnt so much from skills point of view. It was just a shame that my body couldn’t cope with that."

Leach on India: "Stokesy gave us a chat after the Ireland game telling us that the Ashes aren’t the end of the journey, there is more to come after that that we want to achieve.

"If everything goes to plan with my rehab and I’m bowling well enough to be selected then physically, I should be ready to go. That’s what we’re aiming for and if I get on that tour then I’ll be really looking forward to it.

"It’s on its way to healing and I’ve got another scan in a few weeks."

Leach on poetry: "I don’t really know why I wrote a poem. It just started happening, I just thought of these rhyming lines that I started doing as the Ashes was going on. I don’t know if it was a way of me dealing with not playing or being at home.

"I just started thinking, ‘that’s quite funny’ or ‘that’s quite good’ and just thought ‘this is getting quite good’. I obviously needed us to have a positive end to the series to actually read it out.

"Baz does this thing every morning where he asks, ‘does anyone have anything to say? Anything from you?’ Normally I’d just say no or say something ridiculous. He said that exact thing that I knew he was going to say and I started getting my phone out and said, ‘yeah, I’ve written a poem.’

"The lads were like ‘what?! What have you done that for?’ If I was more musical, it would have been a song or a rap but it was just a poem. They all stood up and clapped at the end of it, it felt really good.

"It went down quite well but I wouldn’t be able to tell you it because some things wouldn’t make sense to people outside the dressing room. There were messages in there about how we’ve gone about our stuff.

"There was some seriousness to it but also just a light-hearted reflection on the series. It went down well."

It was a lovely shot from Tom Abell to finish it, too.

But captain Tom Abell and David Willey sensibly steered Welsh Fire home with some sensible batting, finishing unbeaten on 23 and 15 respectively.

Welsh Fire sit third in the table with two wins and a tie from four games, while Birmingham Phoenix have had two washouts but lost their two completed games.

Ben Duckett's move from winless Welsh Fire, after openly asking to not be retained by them, has not quite gone to plan for the England batter.

Phoenix sparked hopes of a comeback against the odds with a couple of quick wickets, with Moeen Ali in particular bowling beautifully for his 1-15.

Welsh Fire's pursuit of 113 was set up perfectly by Stevie Eskinazi's 43 from just 18 balls.

He was promoted to open instead of Luke Wells and certainly made the most of his opportunity!

Captain Tom Abell lofts it over cover for four to seal a six-wicket victory with 15 balls to spare!

Eskinazi's innings has been the standout in terms of the pace he was able to go at at the top of the innings.

Four straight down the ground!

Lovely shot from David Willey to take a lot of the pressure off.

More great running from this pair as they scramble consecutive twos from Benny Howell's first two balls.

That takes it down to nine from 23.

Great shot! Tom Abell nails a reverse sweep for four off Shadab Khan, before sensibly nudging the ball around to take seven from the five balls.

Tom Abell and David Willey do that expertly, just nudging and running well between the wickets.

Until Abell slogs Moeen's last ball high up in the air - and it just lands safely in front of the fielder at deep square.

The Fire batters don't need to do anything reckless here.

Less than a run-a-ball is required so they can do it sensibly in ones and twos, if the bowling is too good to allow a flow of boundaries.

Seeing off the dangerous spin of Moeen Ali is the first job, though. He has five left.
