A History Of The World

Unplaced
Day and time to be confirmed Â鶹Éç ONE

As part of the pan-Â鶹Éç project A History Of The World, Â鶹Éç One broadcasts 12 regional programmes across the English regions. Each of the programmes looks at a significant turning point in that area's history and shows how the change continues to resonate through objects or the landscape.

The Birth Of Steam (South West)
Adam Hart-Davis discovers how a Baptist preacher from Dartmouth worked out how to get energy from steam – and in doing so helped provide the power for the industrial revolution.

Unlocking The Midlands (West Midlands)
Chris Tarrant discovers how James Brindley's invention of a slim-line lock enabled the creation of a huge network of canals and waterways across Britain. Canals connected the industrial Midlands to the sea, allowing the industrial revolution to spread across the globe.

King Alfred ... The Great? (South)
Lucy Worsley tells how King Alfred did much more than allowing some cakes to burn – he united the "English" against a common enemy and revolutionised the country's legal system and military structure. But was he really as great as his reputation suggests?

Suggs meets social historian Claire Langhamer and discovers how Brighton got its reputation for naughty weekends
Suggs meets social historian Claire Langhamer and discovers how Brighton got its reputation for naughty weekends

Brighton – The First Resort (South East)
Suggs traces how Brighton changed from a small fishing village to a fashionable holiday destination, and became the template for seaside resorts across the world.

Suffragette City (London)
Sheila Hancock looks at how the unprecedented actions of middle- and upper-class women sent shockwaves across Britain and around the world.

Ploughs, Cows And Clover (East)
Chris Beardshaw traces the myriad inventions that changed agriculture for ever. He discovers that it was the skills of ordinary village craftsmen, and not wealthy landowners, that revolutionised farming across the world.

The Man Who Shrank The Globe (East Midlands)
Jem Stansfield discovers how the work of Frank Whittle led to the creation of the jet engine, making the whole world a much smaller place.

Jenner's Marvellous Medicine (West)
Professor Mark Horton tells the story of Edward Jenner, whose work saved billions of lives and eventually led to the eradication of smallpox worldwide – and is still influencing the modern-day fight against swine flu.

A Tale Of Two Rival Cities (North West)
Stuart Maconie traces how Manchester and Liverpool have been at the heart of industrial, political and technological revolutions which have shaped the world we live in today. He tells the story of the close, dependent relationship between the cities and reveals how it developed into a bitter rivalry.

Towton – 1461 (North)
Horrible Histories author Terry Deary shows how the Battle of Towton changed the course of the Wars of the Roses, and led to more deaths on British soil that any other battle in British history.

Cumbria's Atomic Pioneers (North East)
Stuart Maconie tells the story of Calder Hall, the world's first nuclear power station, which provided Britain with electricity – and weapons grade plutonium – for nearly half a century.

The Clock That Changed The World (Yorks and Lincs)
The age of modern timekeeping began in Lincolnshire 300 years ago. Adam Hart Davis brings to life the story of how we got from some wooden clocks near Grimsby, to the superiority of British ships on the high seas, to Sat Nav.

Formula 1 – Monaco Grand Prix Qualifying

Live event/outside broadcast
Saturday 15 May
12.10-1.30pm Â鶹Éç ONE

Jake Humphrey hosts live coverage of qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix.

The glitz and glamour of Monte Carlo provides the setting as the drivers negotiate the tight turns of the famous street circuit in an attempt to land the all-important pole position for Sunday.

Jenson Button topped qualifying last year, going on to win the race itself – one of six victories the Briton notched up on his way to the Formula 1 title. Button will be aiming for a similar result this season, although his rivals include Michael Schumacher who will be looking for a record-equalling sixth victory in the race. However, Monaco has also been the scene of controversy for the German, who was stripped of pole position in 2006 after stewards ruled that he deliberately stopped on the track after running wide, preventing rivals from setting a faster qualifying time.

All New Total Wipeout Ep 8/8

Saturday 15 May
5.20-6.20pm Â鶹Éç ONE

In the search for the Champion of Champions, the top three contestants from each previous show return to All New Total Wipeout in one massive head-to-head jamboree across South America's craziest obstacle course.

As always, Richard Hammond and Amanda Byram take charge and guide viewers through the fastest and most competitive episode ever of Total Wipeout.

All the contestants have made it through to the fearsome and soaking wet Wipeout Zone once before, but who can do it again?

The competition is crazier than ever before. Not only do the competitors have Total Wipeout experience, they also have form. And for some of them, that form is bad! How many will have learnt from their mistakes and how many have returned just simply to repeat the same hilarious errors?

The All New Total Wipeout final features some of the best obstacles the course has ever seen. The Rake-in-Face can smack the unsuspecting or over-confident contestant right in the face; a computer games expert, a café owner and a search-and-rescue pilot all become victims in embarrassing but spectacular style.

This week also sees the return of The Swing Thing. Not only a test of skill and strength, it is also a test of judgement. Very few people, even the Total Wipeout finalists, possess all three, while most people here lack two or more... A Take That impersonator and a crime scene investigator just can't make the grade, but a detective inspector makes his mark.

The final also provides original and spectacular solutions to Total Wipeout's favourite obstacles: in a lop-sided boxing match, Huddersfield's very own "Muhammad Ali" stands up to the Sucker Punch; and a cheerleader manages the jammiest ball crossing ever seen on the show.

When it comes to Crash Mountain, the speed and agility of the finalists is astounding, while Dizzy Dummies is one of the closest in this series, with plenty of dirty tricks as the finalists battle it out for that coveted title. The stakes are higher, the competition tougher – and no one is ready to give up their place in the Wipeout Zone without a fight.

Saturday 15 May
9.20-10.10pm Â鶹Éç ONE

There's new blood in the Emergency Department as Lucy Gaskell joins the cast of the medical drama as staff nurse Kirsty Clements. Ruffling feathers, she makes an instant impression – and not necessarily a good one.

It's Kirsty's first day in the ED, but her forceful attitude could be her undoing. Spying Ruth with a patient, Kirsty publicly informs her that he's an addict, after morphine. Ruth is less than impressed to be shown up by the new girl. Jay starts the rumour mill, telling everyone Kirsty left her last job under a cloud. She certainly doesn't impress Tess by later fighting with a patient. It looks as though her stay at the ED could very short...

Jeff and Dixie find Stewart distraught and covered in blood. Investigating a noise in Stewart's basement, Jeff discovers teenager Jamie tied up. Surprisingly, it's only Kirsty who manages to get through to Stewart. He reveals that he's anxious about "Bruce". But when Jay examines Jamie he finds chemical burns – has Stewart tortured his captive?

Meanwhile, Jordan has had a blackout. He gets to work late, dismissing Zoe's questions about his head wound. Henry and Jordan tell hospital board member Robert that the ED needs his funding, but Robert coolly explains that they have to prove they deserve it first. Increasingly pregnant Shona is also back and asking for money, but Charlie is deeply sceptical – especially when he finds a bottle of vodka in her bag.

The Fastest Man Who Has Ever Lived

Saturday 15 May
5.10-6.10pm Â鶹Éç TWO (Schedule addition 6 May)

Usain Bolt is the fastest man on the planet and a sportsman like no other. He blew away his competition at the Beijing Olympics and World Championships in Berlin, seemingly without even trying. But what makes him so much faster than any other man in the history of the human race?

In The Fastest Man Who Has Ever Lived, athletics legend Michael Johnson investigates how 23-year-old Bolt has achieved the speed to have blown the minds of people across the globe.

In an enthralling journey, Johnson travels to Jamaica to spend time with Bolt in Kingston. There, he meets the sprint phenomenon's family in the rural hills of the country and speaks to those who saw Bolt's rise from a cricket-obsessed youngster to one of the most celebrated sports stars of a generation.

The Â鶹Éç's athletics expert also analyses Bolt's biomechanics and not only answers the question of what makes him so fast but also goes further by revealing what could make him even quicker.

Johnson explores every element of the Bolt story from the suspicions of drug-taking and the burden of singlehandedly carrying athletics to how the Jamaican is dealing with the constant worldwide media attention.

I'm In A Rock 'n' Roll Band! – The Drummer Ep 3/6

Saturday 15 May
9.40-10.40pm Â鶹Éç TWO

A graphic illustration of Meg White
I'm In A Rock 'n' Roll Band explores the world of the drummer

The world of the drummer is the latest to be dissected in this series exploring the chemistry of bands and what makes each individual musician tick.

Musical anthropology meets rock autobiography as this episode looks at the evidence and seeks to find out, for better or worse, what it's like being the drummer – the butt of all the jokes; the man at the back; the engine of the band; occasionally the voice of reason; but more often the most likely to go off the rails.

It's the drummer's beat that has crowds swaying and jumping in their thousands. The programme investigates this power, the persona of the drummer, the aesthetics behind their wild behaviour and why they are diminished by their band mates.

They make an unremitting racket and destroy perfectly good furniture; they sweat like boxers and drink like lords, while travelling the world and getting paid. Surely they've won ... beaten the system. Could you get any more rock 'n' roll than that?

Narrated by Mark Radcliffe, the documentary also includes contributions from Tommy Lee; Jason Bonham; Dave Grohl; Taylor Hawkins; John Densmore; Nick Mason; Phil Collins; Stewart Copeland; Stephen Morris; Carl Palmer; and Samantha Maloney.

I'm In A Rock 'n' Roll Band! is a multi-platform project on Â鶹Éç Two, Â鶹Éç Radio 2 and bbc.co.uk. The series culminates in a live studio show in June, where industry experts discuss their favourite rock 'n' roll musicians and create the ultimate fantasy band.

Modern Masters – Picasso

High Definition programme
Sunday 16 May
9.00-10.00pm Â鶹Éç ONE
Alastair Sooke explores how Picasso changed the face of art and design
Alastair Sooke explores how Picasso changed the face of art and design

In a journey that takes him through Spain, France and the US, Alastair Sooke reveals how Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) managed to achieve the status of genius in the 20th century, as Â鶹Éç One's modern art series looking at some of the most notable and influential artists of our time continues.

In interviews with acclaimed contemporary artists as well as fashion commentators and architects, Alastair probes how this extraordinarily prolific artist changed the face of art and design.

Beginning with a bullfight in Picasso's native Spain, Alastair points out that the picador, who provokes the bull into reaction, provided the model for the young artist who wanted to goad the art world. Talking to Picasso's celebrated biographer, John Richardson, in New York, he gets a glimpse of some of the treasures of his private collection and, in doing so, discovers something of Picasso's early and prevailing fascinations along with bullfights: women and sex.

Moving on to Paris, Alastair visits the Bateau-Lavoir in Montmartre where Picasso lived and worked at the outset of his career. From here, Picasso explored a number of styles including the sombre, melancholic, expressionist Blue Period and his warmer, more optimistic Rose Period, through to the African–influenced style that saw the creation of his famous Les Demoiselles D'Avignon (1907), inspired by tribal masks.

Between 1909 and 1911, Picasso, along with his friend and fellow artist Georges Braque, invented Cubism, a style that saw them work in pared-down sombre colours and break perceived objects down in shimmering series of lines and angles. The influence of this fundamental challenge to perspective and the traditional representations of form rippled through fashion, design, film and architecture and continue to do so today.

Studying the Burgh Island Hotel in Devon, the London Metropolitan University building by Daniel Libeskind and Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Alastair considers the huge influence Cubism has had on the built environment.

Picasso discarded Cubism but continued to create potent images. Travelling to Madrid, Alastair comes face to face with Guernica, an anti-war painting as powerful and shocking today as it was then, and one which has spawned many further works of protest art. He reveals how, after this international success, Picasso went on to design the Dove of Peace that has subsequently become a motif for the Peace movement, most recently associated with President Barack Obama's election campaign.

The programme includes interviews with sculptor Anthony Caro and fashion commentator Scott Schuman. Alastair also tracks down model Lydia Corbett, now living and working in Devon, who became the inspiration for Picasso's famous Girl With A Pony Tail pictures when she was just 19, a look that Brigitte Bardot would go on to make famous.

Modern Masters – Picasso is simulcast on the Â鶹Éç HD channel – the Â鶹Éç's High Definition channel, available through Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.

Worried About The Boy

High Definition programme
Sunday 16 May
9.00-10.30pm Â鶹Éç TWO (Schedule addition 5 May)

Worried About The Boy tells the story of a young Boy George who dreams of living a life filled with originality and passion, and of becoming a star in the Eighties fashion and pop music scene.

Growing up as a teenager, George O'Dowd realises he is not like other boys his own age. He is sharp-witted, independent-minded and has a passion for clothes and make-up.

Leaving the London suburbs for the smoke of the city he soon becomes a fixture at the infamous Blitz Club – the favourite haunt of those at the forefront of the New Romantic movement.

Nightclub pioneer and Visage front-man Steve Strange offers George a job as cloakroom attendant at the Blitz. There, he meets Kirk, lead singer of Theatre Of Hate and George's first true love, who inspires him to write his own music.

George approaches music impresario Malcolm McLaren, who agrees to give him the chance to be part of a band. Having failed to fit in with the other band members, he is approached by Mikey, who invites George to be the lead singer of a band he's setting up.

A chance meeting with Jon Moss leads to him joining the band as drummer – and to a short and passionate affair with George. Along with Roy Hay on guitar, the band is edging towards professionalism and Culture Club is complete.

Set at the heart of the changing music scene in the Eighties, Worried About The Boy is as much about Boy George's emotional development and constant search for love as it is about his ambition and career.

The drama reflects on an iconic and influential star and the cultural era he is synonymous with.

Talented newcomer Douglas Booth plays Boy George, Marc Warren (Hustle, Mutual Friends) plays nightclub pioneer and Visage front-man Steve Strange, Richard Madden (Hope Springs) plays Kirk, Mark Gatiss (The League Of Gentlemen, Crooked House) plays music impresario Malcolm McLaren, Dean Fagan plays Mikey, Mathew Horne (Gavin And Stacey, The Catherine Tate Show) plays Jon Moss and Jonny Burt (Fanny Hill, Casualty) plays Roy Hay.

WAGs, Kids And World Cup Dreams Ep 1/5

Imogen Thomas, Amii Grove, Elen Rivas, Ellie Darby and Chantelle Tagoe discover a different side to South Africa
Imogen Thomas, Amii Grove, Elen Rivas, Ellie Darby and Chantelle Tagoe discover a different side to South Africa

Five WAGs – footballers' wives and girlfriends – leave their pampered lives behind to experience the reality of life behind the gloss of the World Cup by rolling up their sleeves to work in some of the poorest and most deprived neighbourhoods in the host nation, South Africa.

They see a completely different side to the glamorous South Africa their partners will see during the World Cup – a country facing problems with health, crime and severe poverty.

Chantelle Tagoe (Emile Heskey's partner), Ellie Darby (Matthew Upson's partner), Elen Rivas (Frank Lampard's ex-partner) and Amii Grove and Imogen Thomas, the ex-girlfriends of Jermaine Pennant and Jermain Defoe, are faced with the stark reality of the orphan crisis, HIV pandemic and social breakdown there.

Starting at the Baphumelele Children's Home in one of the most crime-ridden and dangerous shanty towns, the girls cover 16-hour shifts, caring for children who have been abandoned or abused and are HIV-positive.

Ellie and Imogen have the toughest task – working in the baby houses with 37 children needing round-the-clock attention. On the first day, Imogen is pushed to breaking point, especially as she is nursing a broken heart after her recent split from Defoe. When she sees a young boy brought in to the orphanage, Imogen says: "It just breaks my heart seeing that ... I think, what have they done to deserve this?"

Through the work with the orphans the girls begin to understand the scale of the country's huge problems. Mum-of-two Elen helps administer drugs to babies with HIV, as well as cook food for women dying of Aids. She, too, admits she is suffering from her split with Lampard.

Ellie is horrified when she leaves the relative safety of the orphanage to venture deep into the shanty town, Khayelitsha, to meet a family of three girls fending for themselves after losing their parents to Aids. "I just feel so guilty because there is so much we can do. I could feed that family. Matthew and I are in that position to feed them for the next 10 years – and more families. I just never believed that things were that bad."

  • Â鶹Éç Three has a unique role to play in public service television. It is the only youth-focused channel with a regular commitment to News, Current Affairs and serious Documentaries. Over the next few months, the channel will show documentaries on the war in Afghanistan, child trafficking, autism, the use of rape as a weapon of war in the Congo, bullying and the life of Nelson Mandela.

High Street Dreams Ep 2/4

High Definition programme
Monday 17 May
9.00-10.00pm Â鶹Éç ONE

Businesswoman Jo Malone continues to mentor ordinary people with big retail dreams from across Britain, joined by fellow business pro Nick Leslau and a selection of industry experts. Together, they help nurture the budding entrepreneurs, all of whom have a great product which they believe can be transformed into a commercial success.

In tonight's episode, Jo and Nick help two business-partner pairings desperate to enter the challenging sector of children's nutrition and toy retailing with new products that must not only appeal to children but also to the parents who are responsible for purchasing them.

Primary school teachers Jo Jones and Kay Miller live in the heart of rural Shropshire and have created a play kit that encourages outdoor fun and allows children's imaginations to run wild. Jo and Nick help the women transform their part-time hobby into a must-have children's concept, with the aim of attracting a leading toy store to stock it nationwide.

Meanwhile, husband and wife Paul and Maria Stricker have quit their lucrative city jobs and invested their life savings to create a healthy drink for children. Developing a product that is both nutritious and tasty is tough enough but, with expert help, they have just eight weeks to formulate a product that could secure them a place on the highly competitive supermarket shelves.

Jo and Nick enlist the expertise of Ella's Kitchen founder Paul Lindley, Little Dish's Hillary Graves and leading toy manufacturer David Strang. In the competitive worlds of children's nutrition and toys, Jo and Nick find that making these entrepreneur's high street dreams come true is certainly not child's play.

Great British Menu Eps 31-35/45

Monday 17 May
6.30-7.00pm Â鶹Éç TWO

Three top chefs from Northern Ireland – Brian McCann (Shu Restaurant), Derek Creagh (formerly of Deane's) and Niall McKenna (Restaurant James Street South) – compete in the latest heat for the opportunity to cook at a fabulous banquet celebrating the wealth of delicious UK produce, hosted by HRH The Prince of Wales.

With this year's competition being all about truly local produce, there's an extra challenge for the 24 competing chefs – sourcing new food suppliers from a small part of their region.

The inspiration for Niall McKenna's fish dish – shellfish with seaweed butter – came from the National Trust's Castleward estate, which has a dramatic setting over Strangford Lough. Niall met with local fisherman Norie Duggan to see the variety of shellfish available from the lough, and he also scoured the shores in search of seaweed. His starter is quail with asparagus, sweet radish and quail egg dressing; his main course is fillet of Shorthorn beef with bone marrow, ox tongue and broad beans; and his dessert is poached rhubarb with strawberry jelly, yellowman toffee and lavender ice cream.

Brian McCann began the hunt for his ingredients at Castle Coole, near Enniskillen. He found lamb on the estate which he is using for his main course of rack of lamb with slow-cooked shoulder, sweetbreads, asparagus and champ. He also visited a nearby butcher to find the pork for his starter of slow-cooked pork belly with peas, morels and wild garlic. His menu is completed by seared hand-dived scallops with brassicas, roasting juices and dulse (seaweed); and strawberry and elderflower jelly with warm doughnuts and duck egg ice cream.

Derek Creagh sourced his ingredients from the Causeway Coast area, heading to Rathlin Island to meet with fisherman brothers Liam and Benji McFaul. Fishing is one of the islanders' main livelihoods. After seeing the produce Derek decided to use some locally caught crab as part of his fish course: black sole fillet with crab, dehydrated smoked salmon, rock samphire mousse and oyster vinaigrette. His menu also includes pork terrine with liver mousse, pickled Jerusalem artichoke, hawthorn essence and smoked hazelnuts; loin of lamb cooked in hay with buttered carrots, champ chip and confit lamb belly; and strawberry parfait with basil ice cream, slow-roasted strawberries, black pepper meringue and strawberry soup.

Veteran chef Richard Corrigan judges each of the courses, awarding marks out of ten for taste and technical ability. The chef with the lowest score leaves the competition on Thursday, with the two remaining chefs cooking for the Great British Menu judges – Oliver Peyton, Prue Leith and Matthew Fort – on Friday.

Everything's Rosie Eps 11-15/26

Monday 17 May
9.35-9.45am CBEEBIES
1.35-1.45pm CBEEBIES

It's another week in Rosie's bright and beautiful world on CBeebies.

On Monday, Raggles wants to play his own game of Hide And Eat and he's quick to dash off to hide in the Maze while Rosie starts counting. But Rosie is distracted when Will asks her to help him break his speed record in the Go Speeder, and then Big Bear needs her help to find his missing toffee apple. At last Rosie realises she has forgotten all about Raggles. How will she find him, and will he forgive her?

Holly has a crisis of confidence on Tuesday and her natural dancing ability disappears too. Rosie tries to help but it's only when Oakley offers to teach her a few of his favourite dance moves that Holly's dancing inhibitions dissolve.

When Raggles boasts to Will on Wednesday that he has beaten Rosie in a race, he doesn't know that Rosie let him win. Buoyed by his achievement, Raggles challenges Will to a race. Rosie offers to help Raggles with his training and Bluebird volunteers to be Will's trainer. When it comes to the race both Will and Raggles are tired out with training and Rosie declares the race a draw when neither competitor reaches the finishing line.

There's a Bossy Bluebird on the loose on Thursday. Raggles is tetchy because his penny whistle is missing; Will has been scolded for swinging too high; Big Bear has been told to tiptoe quietly through the woods; and Oakley's been ordered to stop creaking and rustling. But who's behind all these bossy commands? Bluebird! She can't sing her dawn chorus due to all the noise in the garden, so she has decided to take matters into her own wings and stop everyone making any noise. Thankfully, Rosie comes up with a solution which makes everyone happy.

Finally, Bluebird doesn't seem herself. All she does is sit in Oakley's branches watching all the other birds emigrate. Sensing Bluebird may leave them, Rosie and the others set out to show her what wonders their little world has to offer.

They arrive on the heavily fortified floating Roboidz base, Future Gate, to help their part-human, part-machine mentor Caleb fight off the menacing Roboidz machines in order to save the human race.

The new recruits face a battle of challenges to test their nerves and their powers of logic. Face Off, Flame Thrower, Overload and Battlezone are just some of this week's daring missions. The contestants need to use their bravery, dexterity, logic, stealth and strategy to overcome the towering robots in order to gain valuable bio rods. And they must keep their wits about them to avoid the threat of being vaporised and eliminated from the game.

Lindsay Duncan (Doctor Who, Rome) voices Cybele and Neuros, the good and evil alter egos of Roboidz creator Laura Gant, and Stuart Goldsmith stars as Caleb.

Luther (Idris Elba) investigates an abduction

Kirsten Ross, a young mother, has been abducted, as the dark psychological thriller featuring a near-genius murder detective continues. DCI John Luther realises that this is the work of Lucien Burgess, a collector and writer of the occult, who was suspected of the murder of another woman, Grace Allen, 10 years previously; but Burgess was never charged.

Meanwhile, Mark is beaten up. With relations strained between Zoe, her ex-husband Luther and Mark himself, he automatically assumes that Luther is responsible and reports the assault to DSI Teller. But the culprit is not as suspected, and a further twist emerges as Luther receives a recording of the assault from an unknown source.

To complicate things, Martin Schenk from police complaints is brought in and, realising that Schenk is going to suspend him, Luther escapes to buy himself some extra time. On a deadline to find the young mother before it's too late, Luther and Ripley work into the night to piece together clues and link Burgess to another murder committed 20 years earlier.

Luther and Ripley's investigation leads them to the canal, where they find Burgess's narrowboat. They discover Kirsten inside. Ripley wants to call it in, but Luther stops him, knowing that Burgess will wriggle out of it once again if they stick to the rules.

Kirsten Ross is played by Catherine Hamilton, DCI John Luther by Idris Elba, Lucien Burgess by Paul Rhys, Mark by Paul McGann, Zoe by Indira Varma, DSI Teller by Saskia Reeves, Schenk by Dermot Crowley and Ripley by Warren Brown.

The Culture Show

Thursday 20 May
7.00-8.00pm Â鶹Éç TWO (Schedule addition 5 May)

Mark Kermode is at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival as The Culture Show returns for a new series

Miranda Sawyer is at The Brighton Festival speaking to Olivier award-winning playwright Simon Stephens, as Â鶹Éç Two's flagship arts and culture series returns for a new series.

Simon has teamed up with Mark Eitzel to create the musical Marine Parade. Also from the festival, guest artistic director, Brian Eno, will be talking to The Culture Show about his essay What Is The Purpose Of Art?

Classical music lover Sue Perkins visits a community in the Scottish Highlands who are joining forces with professional musicians and performers to stage Benjamin Britten's opera Noye's Fludde in their local church. A campaigner for music education, Sue meets the people behind the Loch Shiel Spring Festival, an area short on concert halls but big on musical ambitions.

Mark Kermode is at the 63rd Cannes Film Festival to present his essential guide to what's hot and what's not from this year's broad and very international list of entrants.

Prize-winning author David Mitchell reads extracts from his latest novel, The Thousand Autumns Of Jacob de Zoet. He also discusses with Andrew Graham-Dixon how the course of the novel was determined by avoiding the pitfalls of historical fiction.

Alex Katz recently painted Anna Wintour, the enigmatic US Vogue fashion editor, without her signature dark sunglasses, revealing her in a new light. Alastair Sooke talks to the artist as he gives the Culture Show a tour of his new exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery and discusses his ongoing fascination with the painted portrait.

Andrew Graham-Dixon also travels to Montacute House in Somerset, where a collection of unseen paintings of mysterious 16th- and 17th-century figures were recently unveiled. Several popular authors have invented short biographical stories to bring these portraits back to life, including Tracy Chevalier who talks to Andrew about this intriguing project.

The programme concludes with an exclusive performance from Seun Kuti – youngest son of Fela and natural successor of the Afrobeat crown – as he performs to the Brighton Festival crowd. Leading his father's legendary band, Egypt 80, Seun is proof that the Afrobeat flame has not diminished since Fela's reign and is influencing chart-topping bands such as Vampire Weekend, Foals and Gorillaz.
