And a guide to recycle your tree

On the last day of Christmas… don’t forget to recycle your tree. But don't get needled about it: most councils will take your real Christmas tree from your doorstep with your garden waste bin.

A Christmas tree collection point

Last year, eight million real Christmas trees were bought in the UK - and this winter, it’s even easier to recycle your tree than before.

There are dozens of collection points across Greater Manchester [see links below for details]

No need to do this

Alternatively, if you have a garden waste bin, most councils say you can simply put your tree out with your normal January 2009 kerbside collection to be recycled.

In 2008, Manchester residents across the city recycled 4,922 trees which, at an average weight of 20kg, came to just under 100 tonnes.

The trees were chipped and used as mulch and on pathways in the city’s green spaces.
