I recall some time last year there was talk of Paddy and Shane Meadows making a film called "king of the Gypsies" which was going to involve Paddy bulking up big style and getting into some bare-knuckle action. Is there any chance this is still going to happen? If not what would be your ideal film role that would necessitate packing on the pounds?

And if you are looking into the world of actor/film/music crossover type stuff, could you not find some reason to play one of the songs off the Labyrinth soundtrack? Bowie? Go on.

Just had another thought that you could always reverse the idea and include bands that ventured onto the world of movie soundtracks.
Of course there's the Vangelis Bladerunner soundtrack, which has featured a number of times already...another goodie is the Tangerine Dream soundtrack to Legend. Very tricky to get hold of and also features "Is Your Love Strong Enough" sung by Brian Ferry with Dave Gilmour on guitar and "Loved by the Sun" with vocals by Jon Anderson. Great Stuff!

Paddy - I loved you in Dead Man's Shoes, any chance of a sequel?

He's more of a director than an actor, but I really like Robert Rodriguez's 'Grindhouse - Main Titles' that he composed for the film.

Also, the 'Coyotes' song from Grizzly Man you played ages ago on The Adam & Joe Show is a great song from a movie and while we're on a country and western theme, Gustavo Santaolalla's 'The Wings' from Brokeback Mountain is really good too.

Surely you've got to play some Spinal Tap?

Do the Swell Season, Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, count as actors in music, although they are musicians turned actors for the movie Once.

I like MargeGunderson's suggestion of bands doing soundtracks, too. Some faves of mine are stuff like Robin Guthrie's ethereal stuff for Mysterious Skin, Kevin Shields' bits n bobs for Lost in Translation, obviously the Blade Runner soundtrack (who doesn't love that?)... and couldn't you include pretty much anything by Danny Elfman in that category? Technically he started out with Oingo Boingo, didn't he? The score for Edward Scissorhands makes me cry even without the film over it.

Also I reckon you have a great excuse to play some Tom Waits (musician/actor). Watched Book of Eli the other day, and he's the only thing I remember from it before I slipped off into a deep coma of boredom.

Great idea Adam. Certainly my favourite musician/actor hybrid is Tom Waits. Primarily a musician, yes, but he's genuinely brilliant in films like Short Cuts and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. And looooooaaads of his songs have featured in movie soundtracks. Pretty much anything by Waits is worth a listen - but why not creep out your audience by playing 'What's He Building In There?'; the lyrics sound like a film plot, and it's scary, like a horror film.

OR, you could double down on the musician/actor hybrid madness by playing one of Scarlett Johanssen's (frankly quite insane) Tom Waits covers. Doesn't get more hybridy than that!

I remember Colin Farrell recorded a particularly awful version of 'I Fought The Law' by the Clash for the soundtrack of the film 'Intermission'. As well as not having a very strong singing voice, he constantly mispronounces the word 'law' as 'lohwrrr', which- as you know, recurs quite often in a song about the 'law'.

Personally, I'm of the opinion that if the 'lohwrrr' had the misfortune to hear to this song even once, it would be quite confused and wonder if it had actually been victorious after all. In fact it would probably lock the taskbar and throw out it's computer:




Also, myself and my brother have had hours of fun quoting from Paddy Considine's performances in 'Dead Man's Shoes' and 'In America' (particularily the lines "You're dyin'... I'm sorry"), I was wondering what's the one quote that people run up to him and yell in his face, or if they are altogether more polite than that.

As it's a Sunday morning, you could probably get away with one of Clint Eastwood's soundtrack pieces and you'll no doubt be chewing your nails trying to decide which Bowie track to play this week.

If you really want to insult yourself and your adoring listeners with a meta song about an actor, by an actor you need look no further than Mr Harris by The Ordinary Fear of God (feat Russell Crowe) and you can even use it as a springboard for Paddy to regale us with his tales of shooting with the great big Kiwi ponce (I say that with a degree of fondness, albeit possibly misplaced).

I'm still working on a suitable title..........

Reiko Ike is my personal favourite actor/singer. Her one and only album was deliriously fun, plenty of Je T'Aime-style grunting and moaning sitting snugly alongside a (3 minute long) cover of Terry Riley's Rainbow In Curved Air. Every song sounds pretty much the same, but that never stopped The Fall did it?

I'm crap at finding titles, sorry. However, here are some recommendations:

[x] Coconut Records, Jason Schwartzman's band, is really good. Any song from second album "Davy" is worth being on a mixtape.
[x] She & Him. It was mentioned in a previous comment. Zooey Deschanel has got a great (if you enjoy that sort of voices, that is). I would pick a song from "Volume Two" rather than 'Volume One', also. Like 'Home' or 'Over It Over Again'. But second album is all good, really.
[x] Rilo Kiley or Jenny Lewis solo, I suppose. I guess she's probably more popular as an actress in the USA, but still. A song like "The Charging Sky" from her first solo record with the Watson Twins sounds like a good pick.

I agree with the above, Coconut Records are a great band and Jason Schwartzman is ace! I'd recommend the songs 'Microphone', 'West Coast' and 'Wandering Around'.

I don't think you can do a tap on musical actors and ignore the work of William Shatner. He's produced a whole host of rambling spoken word versions of popular tunes, but realeased an amazing album called "Has Been" produced by Ben Folds (of Ben Folds Five fame). There is an AMAZING tune that is a Shatner and Henry Rollins rant called "I CAn't Get Behind That" that you realy should play (might wnat to chack for F-Bombs, I'm desensatised to such things).

As for a name? I've struggled.... hows about "Lights! Camera! Rock'n' Roll!"?

Oh, and how about some music from a John Carpenter soundtrack. He did the music for all his movies.... my particular favourite is "Escape From New York" but hey! what not make a little montage of Caprenter Classics???

I should really save all this up for one post, but here's another suggestion...

For the absolute bottom of the barrel of actor/musician take a look at the youtube clip of Ken Barlo rapping on This Morning (search: Bill Roache rapping). WARNING! You may cringe to death.

I don't know if Bill Roache's "J'Taime Teddy Bear" is on the 6music playlist, but I know you can make it happen Dr Buckles!

Definitely need some Scorzayzee on there as others have suggested. What about Jamie Foxx? I'm not a massive fan of a lot of his music but he's got an awesome voice and I thought he was great in "Ray".

Off the top of my head I would suggest these tracks:

Pop Goes my Heart, from the Music & Lyrics soudtrack - Hugh Grant singing perfect 80's pop cheese.

Will Ferrell and the Channel 4 News Team - Afternoon Delight, from the Anchorman soundtrack. "The greatest composition in human history, and if you disagree I will fight you."

Mel Brooks - "It's good to be the King rap" and/or "To be or not to be (the Hitler rap)" Hilariously bad taste lyrics, but both were hits, with funky backing tracks and catchy choruses.

Anything from the Sweeney Todd soundtrack, although probably not very 6 music. "By the Sea" is probably the simplest track. Fantastic film.

Love the show.

Not very 6Music, but Robert Downey Jr does some of that there music stuff. I can't say I've listened to any of it (having YouTubed it, it seems a bit Radio 2) but he's a good pianist. That other Jr as well... Harry Connick Jr. Croonfest.

I absolutely agree that this needs some Shatner on, but I think the track you should play is "I Can't Get Behind That". It also has Henry Rollins, of Black Flag fame, in it. You will find yourself randomly shouting "I can't get behind that!" in the street, I promise.

It's a shame that you can't play Frenzal Rhomb's song "Russell Crowe's Band" due to the copious amounts of swearing.

As far as names go, despite being a bit obvious, i'd submit "Planet of the Mixtapes".

My favourite song by an actor is Johnny Remember Me by John Leyton, an untintentionally hilarious number about a girlfriend dying in an unspecified way. John Leyton played Ginger in Biggles in the 60s and went on to be one of the tunnelers in The Great Escape. What more could you want.

Johnny Depp used to be in a band, called, I believe, P. They may be plops, but probably good for comedy value! I'm sadly lacking in name-thoughts tho, sorry.

I was in John Lewis on Sunday (other stores are available, though not many with the name John in the title), and listened to you for about half an hour in the techie section whilst retuning all the digi-radios to 6music. Black Squadron strikes.............

There's Billy Boyd, who was Pippin in the Lord of the Rings films, who is the singer in a band called Beecake.

Also, not technically an actor, but Neil Buchanan who used to present Art Attack is in a heavy metal band called Marseille.

Well! After listening to the Adam & Joe show for years via podcast and the Big Mix Tape since it began, The Â鶹Éç has decided it is no longer allowed to be heard outside the UK! Apparently Adam's show is now so good it can not be transmitted to ears outside Britain. My feelings are badly hurt by this.

Music by actors you say?

The one name that leaps straight to mind immediately is Peter Wyngarde.

Known more for his iconic TV character Jason King, he's made just the occasional film appearence too - Probably best known as the voice of Klytus the robot in Mike Hodge's hugely under-appreciated Flash Gordon.

Wyngarde recorded a seminal LP in 1970 which was withdrawn and made unavailable for nearly 30 years, due to the nature of track #3 "Rape" (which is offensive in oh so many ways). When the previously eponymous album was re-released on CD it was renamed "When Sex Leers Its Inquisitive Head".

A masterpiece of the unusual, some of the songs are performed in character as Jason King, a couple are spoken word renditions of poems, but the track for the mixtape is his amazing cover version of The Attack's mod-psychedelia single "Neville Thumbcatch".

If you're unfamiliar with the song then you're in for a treat. Hope to hear it featured in what promises to be yet another excellent two hours on Sunday.

Having animated you both I feel I'm in a good position to suggest a tune. Which would be 'Rubert Brown' by Scor-Zay-Zee aka, actor and rapper, Dean Palinczuk. Although anything by Scorz would be great.

My question to Paddy would be... What was your biggest challenge directing your first feature film and when is 'Tyrannosaur' due for release?

I just watched the film Rachel Getting Married and the lead singer of TV on the Radio is the fiance in the film. He sings Neil Young's Unknown Legend in it.

Oh and I just remembered in the film Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Seu Jorge sings some acoustic David Bowie covers in the film, in a different language. Bit odd.

Don't know if these count as they are both singers that act in movies?

The William Shatner debate; It just has to be That's Me Trying. It just has to be. Its one of the saddest things every recorded.
Can't believe that no one has mentioned Richard Harris - McArthur Park so far. And I'll mention it but I bet you won't use it; either Pretend To Be Nice or Backdoor Lover from the Josie & The Pussycats soundtrack. And of course you could play an Aimee Mann track as she was the nihlist with the missing toe from The Big Lebowski.
Oh and if we're talking John Carpenter, his best is the Starman theme. "I love you Jenny Hayden,". Gets me everytime, sniff, sniff, blub.

From the covers alone the Burt Reynolds one is priceless, but my fave is the Anson Williams (Ritchies mate from Happy Days) one. I would never want to hear it as in my imagination it is so profoundly bad that to actually hear it would only leave me disappointed.
It will now live on - only in my memory.

A bit off topic but I know how you like to analyse the derivative and cringe inducing. I also remember you playing 'Loser' by Beck on the old show and saying how your kids loved it. Well, if you thought the original was a bit too depressing for them check out the 'Glee' cover version. Words can describe the awfulness.

Hi Count Buckulese, as a member of slack squadron living out in Shanghai China I always listen to The Adam & Joe show on my way to work which never fails to cheer me up. Recently I have been listening to your big mixtape which has also been great. Unfortunately i went on to iTunes today to try and download it and it said 'This podcast is not available outside the uk'. This is terrible news!! Is there any way around this?
P.S. How about a footie song for the world cup?
