If we were to create a musical map of the UK what would it sound like? Launched in April 2002, 'World on your Street' is Radio 3's answer to that challenge. The country is buzzing with different sounds from around the world, and we want to celebrate your music -- online, on air and on stage.

Online
'World music' can sometimes be focussed on distant horizons so that we miss the musicians from every tradition on the planet living right here in the UK. On this website we have stories of music which has travelled from Punjab to pit top, Brazil to Brighton, Gujerat to Leicester and China to Aberdeen. You'll find not only professional musicians, but the songs that mothers sing to their children, and the music happening every week at weddings, churches, temples, pubs, restaurants and festivals. Explore the different sections of the website:
On your Street: Discover local venues where you can find live music from every tradition, suggested by users of the site
Musicians' stories: Read interviews with over 100 musicians, and listen to tracks of their music
Your Charts: Explore the UK's favourite lullabies, wedding songs, football songs, and other songs reflecting the diverse range of communities in the UK
Hands on: Try our online percussion and vocal workshops.
The Street: Send your kids on a virtual trip to discover the music and culture of five different traditions - India, Ireland, Brazil, Turkey and Nigeria.
Internet Radio Show: Sit back for an hour-long showcase of music from the website. With editions presented by Rita Ray, Fiona Talkington, Charlie Gillett and Giles Peterson.
On stage
Many of the musicians features on the website have taken part in our live events. At the WOMAD festival in Reading we ran a World on your Street tent with a weekend of performances and workshops: see and for photos and audio. There have also been showcases in , where we took over the city's marketplace for an evening, and , which held a WOYS day in the New Vic theatre. In London we have a regular monthly showcase in the Union Chapel, Islington, as part of the concert series.
On air
World on your Street has been reflected on air on Radio 3, especially within World Routes (Saturdays 3pm) which has devoted a number of programmes to WOYS musicians and stories. They've featured refugee musicians from the Celebrating Sanctuary festival in London, the favourite songs of taxi drivers in Bristol, and all kinds of musical events from Afro-Cuban drumming parties to Tamil New Year. WOYS musicians have appeared live in studio on World Routes, Andy Kershaw and Late Junction, and we've had special World on your Street broadcasts from around the country on World Music Day 2003 and . Other Â鶹Éç networks have also covered music and stories from the project, including Radio 4's Woman's Hour, The Ticket on World Service, Â鶹Éç Asian Network and Â鶹Éç Radio Wales.
Our partners
We have enjoyed working with a range of partners from across the UK on our projects. For example, in our search to search to discover the UK's best wedding songs, World on your Street teamed up with Â鶹Éç Asian Network, jewish.co.uk, Olay (Turkish newspaper) and Focus (Nigerian magazine). Other partners include fRoots magazine, WOMAD festival, Celebrating Sanctuary festival, Sound It Out Community Music in Birmingham, and the Usher Hall in Edinburgh (who are planning a WOYS event in spring 2004).
Where next?
Our big new project is the launch of Africa on your Street, joining with African partners to create a focus for the African music scene here in the UK. We are also working on developing World on your Street sections within the Â鶹Éç's network of local 'Where I live' websites. Visit our websites in and for a taste of things to come.
