Charles Ives was the first great modernist composer in the United States. Making a living as a life insurance salesman, he composed some of the most innovative music to emerge from the New World in the early 20th century. New Yorker music critic Alex Ross and leading composer John Adams discuss his music, while his masterpiece 'Concord Sonata' is performed by Timothy Andres.
