Idris Elba stars as DCI John Luther

DCI John Luther returns to work after a spell of leave following the traumatic arrest of serial killer Henry Madsen, in this dark psychological thriller featuring a near-genius murder detective whose brilliant mind can't always save him from the dangerous violence of his passions.

Luther's first case is to investigate the murder of the parents of child genius Alice Morgan. He quickly deduces that Alice is responsible for the deaths, but the seemingly perfect crime leaves no evidence with which to convict Alice.

Outside of work Luther is trying to win back his wife, Zoe, now he's got his life back on track. She has moved on, however, and has a new man in her life: Mark, who is the antithesis of Luther. Will Luther be able to save his fractured marriage to Zoe?

As the murder case proceeds, Luther realises he has become Alice's next project and that Zoe is in danger 鈥 because he dared to question Alice's brilliance. Luther and Alice seem to have a strange connection 鈥 both extraordinarily intelligent, they verbally spar with each other and seem to delight in the competition.

Luther's brilliant mind soon works out how Alice managed to kill her parents without leaving a trace, but without the evidence of the gun there is nothing he can do. On this occasion it seems Alice has won 鈥 but Luther refuses to give up. In the meantime, unbeknown to Luther, Alice has tracked down Henry Madsen to his hospital bedside where he lies in a coma. But what does she intend to do now that she has found him?

Luther is a crime drama with a twist: in each exciting and fast-moving story, the murderer's identity is known from the start 鈥 focusing the drama on the psychological duel between hunter and quarry, who sometimes have more in common than either would like to think.

Creator and writer Neil Cross is an acclaimed suspense novelist and was lead writer for the last two series of Spooks.

Idris Elba is DCI John Luther, Ruth Wilson is Alice Morgan, Indira Varma is Zoe Luther, Paul McGann is Mark North, Warren Brown is Justin Ripley, Steven Mackintosh is DCI Ian Reed, Saskia Reeves is DSU Rose Teller and Anton Saunders is Henry Madsen.

Luther Ep 2/6

Unplaced
Day and time to be confirmed 麻豆社 ONE

DCI John Luther is called to the shooting of two uniformed police officers, as the intense psychological thriller continues. The murders are cold-blooded but appear motiveless. Luther quickly realises that the killer is a soldier and that he seems to be targeting anyone wearing a police uniform.

With Ripley's help, Luther identifies the killer as Owen Lynch 鈥 but not before they are called to the scene of another shooting, where three more police officers are gunned down.

Meanwhile, Alice has been investigating Luther and, to his horror, seems to know what happened to serial killer Henry Madsen during his arrest. She baits him further by asking what Zoe would think if she knew the truth. Concerned for Zoe's safety, Luther urges her to leave London as he fears Alice will come after her again, but Zoe refuses to believe him.

Trying to uncover the killer's motives, Luther discovers that Owen is taking his orders from his father, Terry Lynch, a convicted police killer. Terry wants his sentence quashed and is threatening further deaths unless his terms are met.

Determined to flush out Owen, Luther gives a taunting television interview, ensuring that all of Owen's anger and hatred is focused on him. However, in an effort to catch his killer, has Luther just signed his own death warrant?

DCI John Luther is played by Idris Elba, Justin Ripley by Warren Brown, Owen Lynch by Sam Spruell, Alice Morgan by Ruth Wilson, Zoe Luther by Indira Varma and Terry Lynch by Sean Pertwee.

All New Total Wipeout Ep 6/8

Saturday 1 May
5.25-6.25pm 麻豆社 ONE

Twenty more intrepid British souls head to Argentina in search of sun, sport and the sweet smell of success on the silliest obstacle course in the world, as Richard Hammond and co-host Amanda Byram present the sixth in the current series of All New Total Wipeout.

Most hopefuls will return with nothing more than a bruised body and ego along with some rope burns, but one will be 拢10,000 richer and the proud holder of the prestigious title of Total Wipeout Champion.

There's an all-new qualifier this week, as contestants battle against the Catwalk Sweeper designed to knock them clean off their feet. They will also be swinging from the ceilings on the curiously named Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah and bounced into oblivion, as always, on the Big Red Balls.

Twelve contestants take on the terrifying Crash Mountain; five are spun senseless on Dizzy Dummies; and just three will be left to pit their wits, if they have any left, against the stupendously difficult Wipeout Zone.

Will Michael Jackson fanatic Troy from Dundee produce a Thriller of a performance, or will he be plain Bad? Can hairdresser Ed from Sussex cut it and will cat lover Bonny from Luton pull off a purr-fect run, or will it end in cat-astrophe?

I'm In A Rock 'n' Roll Band! 鈥 The Singer Ep 1/6

New series
Saturday 1 May
9.40-10.40pm 麻豆社 TWO (Schedule addition 21 April)

From the first time they play live to their dying day, rock 'n' roll bands are loved by millions of people who keep a special place in their hearts for their favourite groups and musicians.

Now, 麻豆社 Two presents a new six-part series investigating what makes the perfect rock 'n' roll band.

As part of a multi-platform project with 麻豆社 Radio 2 and bbc.co.uk, the series dissects the traditional band, looking at what makes each of the individual members tick, and culminating in a live studio show in June, in which industry experts discuss their favourite musicians before creating the ultimate fantasy band.

This first programme examines the role of the singer, often the mouthpiece of the band and the gateway to the fans. Untouchable yet one of the people; extrovert yet shy offstage; unutterably ugly yet a pin-up to thousands, they all have a lingering impact on people's lives.

Examining the role of the leader, this documentary delves into what makes them such a success, looking at the aesthetics behind the faces and uncovering the roots of their enduring appeal.

It also explores the pressures of being the leader, the stage personas and the hiring and firing, as well as the relationships they develop with their fellow bandmates and the fans. Highlighting great singers, the programme journeys through some of the greatest rock 'n' roll stories of the last 50 years.

Narrated by Mark Radcliffe, I'm In A Rock 'n' Roll Band! includes contributions from Jon Bon Jovi, Siouxsie Sioux, Shirley Manson, Roger Daltrey, Matt Bellamy, Alice Cooper, Bob Geldof, Noddy Holder, Sting and many more.

Modern Masters

New
Sunday 2 May
9.00-10.00pm 麻豆社 ONE (Schedule addition 21 April)

A new, four-part modern art series looks at some of the most notable and influential artists of our time and makes the claim that Picasso, Dali, Matisse and Warhol are Modern Masters.

Artists with intriguing life stories, millionaires in their own lifetimes, it's small wonder that Picasso, Dali, Matisse and Warhol have been embraced by the mainstream, spanning high and low culture in a unique manner. The series looks in depth at each artist and explores why these modern masters deserve their fame and how their legacy continues to pervade our culture and everyday lives.

Iconic Pop Artist Andy Warhol launches the series. Talking to celebrities as diverse as actor Dennis Hopper, celebrity designer Nicky Haslam and singer Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, wife of the French president Nicolas Sarkozy, Alastair Sooke asks whether Warhol (1928-1987) deserves his fame and the price tag that his work has acquired.

Heading from the O2 Arena, where Andy Warhol鈥檚 portrait of Michael Jackson went on temporary display in 2009 after the death of the musician, to the artist鈥檚 hometown of Pittsburgh, Sooke follows Warhol鈥檚 life story and explores the reasons why he gains such admiration.

Pittsburgh today is a far stretch from the poor town in which Warhol grew up during the depression of the Thirties. Rediscovering the kind of impoverished life the artist originally experienced, Sooke discovers how Warhol perceived his artistic talent as a means of getting out of the ghetto and improving his social status.

Beginning work as a commercial artist in New York in 1949, Warhol quickly proved successful and the leap from his commercial work to fine art was made with the creation of the famous cola bottle and soup can works of art. These are important contributions to Pop Art 鈥 a movement that chose to use commercial, popular imagery to make serious comment.

Talking to those who were part of Warhol鈥檚 Factory studio, where he and his assistants used mass production techniques to generate his work 鈥 including his portraits of famous stars such as Marilyn Monroe 鈥 Sooke tries his hand at silk screen printing, making his own self-portrait.

Joining a Factory reunion party, Alastair also sits for a Warhol 鈥渟creen test鈥. When Warhol began to experiment with film, he would ask the rich and famous to sit in front of his lens for this purpose.

Alastair also explores Warhol鈥檚 use of branding in his art. Not only did the artist feature branded goods and film stars such as Marilyn and Elvis in his work, but he also exploited branding techniques to enhance his own fame. His famous 鈥渓ook鈥 鈥 the striped T shirt and blonde wig 鈥 coupled with his constant flirtations with the media, elevated Warhol to a level of stardom rarely achieved by artists.

Talking to media commentators and leading contemporary artists such as Marc Quinn, Sooke considers the influence of Warhol in the new media age as a role model for today鈥檚 artists and fame seekers alike and wonders if Warhol鈥檚 predictions about a future where everyone could be "famous for 15 minutes", has come true.

Professor Jerry Brotton explores how mapping the world helped fuel plunder and conquest
Professor Jerry Brotton explores how mapping the world helped fuel plunder and conquest

Professor Jerry Brotton concludes his series by tracing how the first maps of distant lands tempted adventurous explorers with fables and riches. Mapping the world, he explains, helped fuel plunder and conquest.

First, explorers had to tackle the great challenge of mapping the globe onto a flat surface. There is no perfect solution to the task, but the Father of Geography, Claudius Ptolemy, had some clever ideas in his pioneering map-making kit. Ptolemy's discoveries were then put to the service of trade and plunder all over the world.

Christopher Columbus sailed into the unknown in search of riches, discovering a new continent that would become the most powerful on Earth, while Amerigo Vespucci gave it his name.

Sir Walter Raleigh's treasure map of Eldorado in South America ultimately cost him his head. But the myth of Eldorado lived on, sending hundreds of men to their deaths in fruitless attempts to find the fabled golden city.

As navigation across the globe became easier, world maps enabled nations and enterprises such as the Dutch East India Company to plunder far-off territories for spices, natural resources and gold. Even today, a project to map the North Pole represents the flashpoint for the so-called "Cold Rush" 鈥 the dash to exploit oil, gas and mineral reserves as the Arctic ice melts.

麻豆社 Four's maps series coincides with a British Library exhibition, Magnificent Maps 鈥 Power, Propaganda And Art, which runs from 30 April.

Maps 鈥 Power, Plunder And Possession is simulcast on the 麻豆社 HD channel 鈥 the 麻豆社's high definition channel, available through Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media.

Great British Menu Eps 21-25/45

Bank Holiday Monday 3 May
6.30-7.00pm 麻豆社 TWO

Three chefs from Wales 鈥 James Sommerin (The Crown at Whitebrook), Richard Davies (The Manor House) and Aled Williams (Plas Bodegroes) 鈥 compete this week for the chance to cook at a fabulous banquet celebrating the wealth of delicious produce grown, reared and fished across the UK, to be hosted by HRH The Prince of Wales.

With 24 chefs across eight regions, competition is fierce and there's extra pressure on them all to source as many ingredients as possible from new, local suppliers.

James Sommerin's hunt for ingredients begins at the Llanerchaeron estate, which dates back to the 18th century. He's inspired to use sea trout (sewin) for his fish course 鈥 poached and smoked sewin with apple, beetroot, turnip and smoked mussels 鈥 on a visit to the River Aeron, where he meets Ricky Wilson, a fisherman who uses a coracle, a traditional method of fishing used hundreds of years ago. James's menu also includes a starter of pressed chicken terrine with asparagus, onion and jasmine; a main course of lamb four ways with salt-baked celeriac, rosemary and tomato; and beetroot parfait with a chocolate and raspberry brownie for dessert.

Richard Davies based the search for his new suppliers in and around the Stackpole estate in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. He was very keen on featuring meat from rare breed cattle in his main course dish and eventually decided on Welsh Black beef following a visit to Trehill Farm, one of the tenant farms on the estate, serving it with leek and potato terrine and shallot puree. Richard's starter is a summer salad of pea mousse with pickled beetroot and carrots; his fish dish is poached lobster with confit potatoes and tomato chutney; and his dessert is mint mousse with hazelnut biscuit, strawberry sorbet and juice.

Aled Williams was challenged with sourcing ingredients from new suppliers in the vicinity of Penrhyn Castle, a 19th-century neo-Norman castle, located between Snowdonia and the Menai Strait in North Wales. In search of unusual flavours for his dessert (lemon verbena baked custard with strawberries and black pepper shortbread), he learns more about lemon verbena from Rowena Mansfield, a herb grower on the Isle of Anglesey. Also on Aled's menu are ham hock with cawl cennin foam and smoked cheddar mousse; sea bass with brown crab, fennel puree and tomato and herb dressing; and loin and shoulder of hogget with morels, asparagus and broad beans.

Veteran chef Stephen Terry awards points for taste and technical ability, and the chef with the lowest total score on Thursday leaves the competition. The two remaining chefs go through to cook for the Great British Menu judges 鈥 Oliver Peyton, Prue Leith and Matthew Fort 鈥 on Friday.

Everything's Rosie on CBeebies

There's a new girl in town this week, and her name is Rosie. Together with her colourful friends, Rosie takes CBeebies' viewers on a journey to her bright, beautiful world packed with adventures and charming delights.

Confident, caring Rosie shares her world with her best friend Raggles, an endearing rabbit; Bluebird and her chatty beak; boisterous Will; placid Holly; polite and playful Big Bear; and Oakley, a calm soul who happens to be a 100-year-old oak tree.

Everything's Rosie is all about friendship. Together, Rosie and her group of friends embark on playful journeys of discovery, interaction and fun.

On Monday, Oakley wants to join in with his friends' game of hide-and-seek and find out How To Hide An Oak Tree. There's just the small issue of Oakley's enormous size and obvious visibility... Not even a touch of Bluebird's magic can help hide him, so Rosie, Raggles and their friends set about trying to make Oakley disappear.

Ala-Kalama-Kazagaza-Zoom is the cry on Tuesday, when everyone is amazed that Bluebird's vanishing trick actually seems to have worked. They are all convinced that Bluebird has made Raggles disappear before their very eyes. But having never before managed such a trick, Bluebird has no idea as to how she can make Raggles reappear.

In Wednesday's midweek treat Will is convinced he can fly 鈥 it's just that his arms aren't feathery enough to pass as wings. Bluebird tries to magic him some; alas, without success. Not being one to admit he needs help, Will eventually turns to Rosie, who has a plan to enable Will's wish to come true.

On Thursday, Big Bear is worried as he has received an invitation to have tea with the Queen 鈥 but while he has been on plenty of picnics, he's never gone to tea... So in best Pygmalion style, Rosie and Raggles teach him "going to tea" etiquette. Of course, the invitation is a prank by Will so Rosie and Raggles invite a disappointed Big Bear to have tea with them, which he does in style.

Wrapping up the week, in From Little Acorns Great Oakleys Will Sleep, Oakley hasn't had a good night's sleep for weeks 鈥 all because his Little Acorns keep him awake with their chattering. So Rosie comes up with the idea to get them into shape as a choir, teaching them a beautiful lullaby... and pretty soon, Oakley is having the soundest sleep he's ever had.

Written by Doctor Who and The Sarah Jane Adventures writer Phil Ford and showcasing the voice of award-winning actress Lindsay Duncan, the bold series features characters created by prosthetic and costume specialists Millennium FX (Doctor Who, The Day Of The Triffids).

Set in a post-apocalyptic landscape, Mission:2110 sees teams of contestants spanning time to travel to the futuristic setting of Earth to try to restore peace and stability. However, when Tom realises what losing this case will mean for his own family's finances, he goes behind Patty's back and tells Tessa that her mother's death wasn't an accident, but rather a murder engineered by the Tobins.

Meanwhile, barred from an annual trip to oversee an African charity she has supported, Marilyn Tobin asks Leonard Winstone to get the decision overturned. As Winstone tries to protect the Tobins from losing their money 鈥 or worse 鈥 he is caught off guard by the arrival of his father, Albert Wiggins.

Upset by what she has been told by Tom, Tessa arrives at the DA's office with questions for Ellen and her colleague, Nick Salenger. When Nick accuses her of working with Patty, Ellen insists that she has been playing her former boss for information, despite the DA's admonitions to drop the case.

Finally, as the effort to reinstate Marilyn to the charity is shut down by Stuart Zedeck, the very person Winstone sent to help her, Ellen begins to suspect that the woman in her dreams may actually be her birth mother. And as Ellen decides to do nothing on behalf of her jailed sister, and Wiggins makes it clear that he expects to be cut in on his son's deal with the Tobins, Patty and Tom get a one-week reprieve from the judge just before Tessa is arrested while on her way to meet them.

Patty is played by Glenn Close, Tom by Tate Donovan, Tessa Marchetti by Vanessa Ray, Ellen by Rose Byrne, Patty's investigator by Todd Davis, Carrie by Miriam Shor, Marilyn Tobin by Lily Tomlin, Leonard Winstone by Martin Short, Albert Wiggins by Bill Raymond, Nick Salenger by Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Stuart Zedeck by Dominic Chianese.

The Edible Garden Ep 5/6

Wednesday 5 May
8.00-8.30pm 麻豆社 TWO

Alys Fowler grows flowers and herbs in her pretty but productive backyard for many reasons and this week she shares a few of her creative ideas, as she continues her challenge of growing enough food in her small urban garden for her and her husband to eat at least one good meal a day for a large part of the year.

From herb omelettes to bread made with rosemary, and from salads of edible blooms to lavender biscuits 鈥 even elderflower champagne 鈥 flowers and herbs are the garden garnishes that bring both the garden and kitchen to life. Alys uses them to flavour her food, to decorate her home and to attract wildlife 鈥 essential for the health and productivity of her garden.

Alys's mission during the series is to prove that growing and cooking your own fruit and vegetables is hugely rewarding, cost-effective and life-enhancing. The series follows her across the growing year as she transforms her small patch into a place where peas climb up roses, beetroot sit happily next to sunflowers and dwarf beans and lettuces edge the path.

Those new to growing their own vegetables can visit 麻豆社 Learning's Dig In website at bbc.co.uk/digin for expert advice, information and encouragement, plus recipes and news of a nationwide Dig In Tour.

Kathryn Rayward and Mark Hill continue to add style and glamour to people's homes
Kathryn Rayward and Mark Hill continue to add style and glamour to people's homes

Interior designer Kathryn Rayward and antiques expert Mark Hill create an elegant entertaining space as they continue their mission to prove that people can add style and glamour to any type of home by investing in antique, vintage and retro furnishings, without breaking the bank.

David and Charlotte Coupland recently moved into the house of their dreams, a Georgian pile dating back to 1789. They want to transform their non-descript dining room into an elegant space for entertaining, using furnishings in keeping with the period of the property.

Buying only original Georgian pieces would blow David and Charlotte's budget, so Mark and Kathryn encourage them to mix Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian antique pieces. The result: David and Charlotte have an impressive period dining room that's sophisticated, beautiful and affordable.

Also in the programme, Mark gives expert advice on antiques or collectibles to invest in now, that he believes will go up in value in the future. Tonight it's Fifties homeware and often-neglected Seventies metalware. Meanwhile, Kathryn uses the ancient technique of gilding to give a contemporary twist to a traditional pair of antlers.

History Cold Case Ep 1/4

New series
Thursday 6 May
9.00-10.00pm 麻豆社 TWO (Schedule addition 21 April)

A revelatory documentary series featuring ground-breaking forensic techniques is set to shed new light on the history of our forebears, by unearthing the remarkable life stories of human skeletons from across the ages.

History Cold Case follows the fascinating work of world-renowned Professor Sue Black at the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at the University of Dundee.

Sue and her team run Britain鈥檚 finest forensic investigation unit, where they specialise in dead bodies, crime scenes and human identification. But now, for the first time, they are going to use their extraordinary talents to delve into the past 2,000 years of history and, quite literally, give unidentified human skeletons their identities back.

The remains have been found in a range of circumstances: from a medieval knight with an arrow in his back found under a floor of a Scottish castle, to a heavily scarred Georgian woman discovered in a mass burial pit in London, to a mummified child from Victorian Britain.

All are everyday people from across the ages, whose extraordinary stories would have died with them if it weren鈥檛 for Sue Black and her colleagues.

With forensic science techniques such as carbon dating, bone chemical analysis and facial reconstruction, the remains are analysed in staggering detail and the team find new layers to add to the knowledge of Britain鈥檚 past.

Remarkable stories of everyday people are painstakingly reconstructed, along with their faces 鈥 which haven鈥檛 been seen for hundreds of years. Much more than just historical remains, the skeletons pose three big questions for the team: Who were they? Why did they die? What does their life story tell us that we didn't know before?

In programme one an apparently African skeleton, unearthed near a medieval English monastery, pushes Professor Black鈥檚 forensics team to their limits. Bone analysis offers clues about the true origins of the mysterious skeleton and facial reconstruction meticulously reveals his face, not seen for centuries. The historical trail points to new evidence about British ancestry and the case takes an unexpected twist when they discover the tragic truth about how he died.

Disco dancing has changed James's life
Disco dancing has changed James's life

Andy and Sheila Hobley have three children 鈥 16-year-old Alex and 10-year-old twins George and James. But they are not a typical family 鈥 all three boys have autism. Alex is into emo music, George likes playing computer games and James likes dancing and is, in fact, a champion disco dancer.

Two years ago, James couldn't read or write; he struggled at school and was happier playing with his cats than talking to his family. Then a leaflet for disco-dancing lessons dropped through his door and changed his life for ever. Within six months, he'd won countless competitions and was crowned best beginner at the World Disco Championships.

Now, James's goal is simple; he wants to win what's arguably the biggest disco competition out there 鈥 Disco Kid in Blackpool.

James's family believes dancing has "unlocked" his mind. Since he started dancing, his reading and writing has improved drastically, his memory and co-ordination has got better and, for the first time in his life, he has friends. Andy and Sheila have invested thousands of pounds on dance lessons, travel and fancy costumes preparing James for competitions and believe the remarkable transformation they have seen in their son has been worth it.

This film reveals how dancing has transformed James's life and follows him on his incredible journey. James believes that dancing has fixed his brain 鈥 but will his progress be enough to see him through to the final of Disco Kid?

This programme is part of a ground-breaking series of films about young people with autism. These warm and insightful programmes explore the complex lives of these young people as well as the challenges they face.

In Parliament Assembled 鈥 1959 Archive

Thursday 6 May
9.25-9.55pm 麻豆社 PARLIAMENT

Just before polls close on Thursday 6 May, 麻豆社 Parliament delves into the archive, to 1959, to bring an outsiders' view of the goings-on in the Palace of Westminster.

In 1959, American journalist Julius Evans travelled to London to explain the procedures of Parliament to an American audience. State Opening and The Queen's Speech is illustrated by Black Rod, Sir Brian Horrocks, and Speaker William Morrison talks about his role in the Commons.

In other archive interviews, three MPs (who have since died) give their views: the late Tory MP Bill Deedes explains why his job as a Daily Telegraph journalist isn't a conflict of interest with his role as an MP; Labour MP Anthony Greenwood talks about the Labour leadership; and Liberal MP Mark Bonham-Carter explains Question Time in the Commons.

The programme also takes a look at the workings of No. 10 Downing Street with an archive interview with the late Sir Edward Bridges, Cabinet Secretary in Churchill's War Cabinet.

The more things change, the more they stay the same. This gem from the archive is a must-see for politicos before they sit down to enjoy the 麻豆社's election-night coverage.

How To Live A Simple Life Ep 1/3

New series
Friday 7 May
9.00-10.00pm 麻豆社 TWO (Schedule addition 21 April)

Anglican priest Peter Owen Jones goes back to basics to try to live a simpler and more meaningful life in this new series.

Inspired by his experiences in last year's 麻豆社 Two series Around the World In 80 Faiths, Peter returns to credit-crunch Britain and to the realisation that modern life has become a frenzy of spending and working. He yearns for a life of simplicity and meaning 鈥 a deeper connection to both nature and people. Filmed over the course of eight months in his beautiful Sussex parishes, the series follows Peter as he tries to turn his back on consumerism.

Peter initially starts his new life by downsizing, helping the local farmer and growing his own vegetables. However, when after five months this doesn't prove enough, he decides to follow the example of medieval saint Francis of Assisi and goes into "voluntary poverty", to try to live without money altogether. The series explores whether Peter can survive without cash in his own parishes, and if his parishioners will support 鈥 and possibly even join 鈥 him.

Throughout the series, Peter hones his skills as a gardener, chicken-keeper, wood-chopper and dishwasher in an unpredictable and entertaining journey as he tries to uphold the Rule of St Francis in today's consumer-based society.
