Your Story: The Verderers of Epping Forest. |

Epping Forest is the remaining fragment of the Royal Forest of Essex. Although the exclusive right of the monarch to hunt deer probably existed prior to the Norman invasion, it was William the Conqueror who first introduced a formal set of laws that applied to the forests in England in which the King hunted. The laws applied not only to the physical woodland waste, but to the adjoining farmland and villages. The villagers considered the laws to be oppressive as they restricted their rights to hunt for food in the forest, and to lop wood in the forest for use as building materials or as a source of fuel for heating their houses.
