Concert Information

French soloist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger performs Boulez’s virtuosic second piano sonata of 1947-48, which brought Boulez to international prominence. Modelled on a Beethovenian classical style, the work has four movements. The feisty opening movement is quelled by a slow kaleidoscopic second movement. The lively and defiant final movement closes with a surprising moment of calm.

The Â鶹Éç Symphony Orchestra then presents a hugely important chamber work in Boulez’s output; his Éclat for 15 instruments. Boulez’s compositional approach here involves controlled chance, where the players improvise around music Boulez has presented within boxes in the score. The ensemble is then joined by 9 violas and a basset clarinet for Multiples, but the two groups remain distinct in this adjoining work.

Please note that this concert will be conducted by Pablo Rus Broseta in place of the originally advertised Francois-Xavier Roth.
