Yael Bartana wins 2010 Artes Mundi prize

Israel-born artist Yael Bartana has been awarded the 2010 Artes Mundi prize, the biggest contemporary arts prize in the UK.

Now dividing her time between her homeland and Amsterdam, Bartana creates complex visualizations with photography, film, video, sound and installation - often focusing upon Israel and the Israeli situation.

Bartana will collect the £40,000 prize for her work, which the judges said had 'consistently stimulated thinking about the human condition and added to our understanding of humanity'.

Bartana, who was unable to make it to the announcement last night at the , follows in the footsteps of the previous winners NS Harsha, Eija-Liisa Ahtila and inaugural winner Xu Bing.

Professor Sarat Maharaj , who chaired the judging panel, said: "The incredibly high standard of work by the eight shortlisted artists - across painting, photography, film, video, sound, installation and drawing - made the jury's decision a difficult one."

will remain on display at the National Museum in Cardiff until 6 June 2010.
