On 31 March 2006, Eija-Liisa Ahtila was announced as the winner of the 2006 £40,000 Artes Mundi Prize.
Gerardo Mosquera, chair of the judging panel said: "The panel looked at each artist in depth and decided to award the second Artes Mundi Prize to Eija-Liisa Ahtila.
"We were impressed by the sophistication of her artistic language, how she has developed and extended our experience of video art together with artist film, and how her subject matter relates in a profound yet personal way to Artes Mundi's theme of the human condition."
The two independent selectors who will shortlist the eight artists for Artes Mundi's third exhibition and prize in 2008 are Olabisi Silva from Nigeria, who co-curated the Dakar Biennale in 2006, and Isabel Carlos from Portugal, who was the artistic director of the Sydney Biennale in 2004.
