Stuart's First Day at the festival

  • Stuart Maconie - Radio 2 & 6 Music

If the word festival makes you think of cagoules, trenchfoot and watching your tent blowing over a , you really ought to come to South By SouthWest one year. As I sit here looking out over the lake, it鈥檚 late afternoon, the temperature is nudging 80 and the first margarita of the day is looking very attractive. This is my kind of festival.

Yesterday dropped by to play some songs from her new album for my Saturday afternoon show. Tomorrow, I鈥檒l be meeting up with a raggle-taggle quartet called for a live session into Thursday night's Radcliffe and Maconie show and throwing open the doors of our ad-hoc but charming studio on the second floor of the Town Lake hotel to , one of the legion of Brit hopefuls who come here every year and go home with a sore head and, hopefully, a whole new fanbase

Tonight are playing at barbecue for what promises to be the most over-subscribed show of the whole shebang. Stubbs is essentially a big back yard so its not every day you get to see rock aristocracy in such informal surroundings. We can but try our luck with the inevitable queues having I hope taken in first. I just received a text from Steve 鈥淟ammo鈥 Lamacq saying that he鈥檒l meet me at the Pterodactyl show at 10.30. I have no idea who are but I鈥檒l be there, sharing a fancy cocktail with rock鈥檚 premier opinion former.

Before that though I have to meet a lady whose going to talk me through Austin鈥檚 best free show, the nightly exodus of the from the bridge I can see from my window. Austin is weird like that as well as welcoming and SXSW is my kind of festival.

I loved the Felice Brothers session last night. They, for me, are the big discovery of 2008!

Do you have any more pictures or video of what's happening at SXSW, this site is really badly laid out, I can't find anything. Seems like there isn't very much going on at the festival at all

Hi Antony - sorry you find the site hard to use. There are videos throughout the blog - and a link to Flickr for pictures in the right hand column of this page.

    thanks

Stuart, check out Mike Milligan and the Altar Boyz, a blues band with soul, the band are suitably weird (well, it is Austin) and Milligan himself has a great voice (think Van Morrison, but in tune, meets Sam Cooke and Paul Jones), Alan, Buxton, Derbyshire

I have to agree with Anthony Vittadini, I'm trying to find information about Sat 15th broadcast and it is totally unclear where to find this info, and the main page for Stuart's show has 8th of March as 'This Week'. Navigation on these pages is a nightmare - no site map (that I can find) and it is unclear what part of the site one is on, these are just two of my gripes. Love the idea of what Beeb are trying to do but the execution is, sadly, woeful.

I was listening to Stuart's programme on Saturday whilst walking the dog. Unfortunately, the reception wasn't brilliant and I heard some american band/group (wearing hawaiian shirts apparently). Can anyone tell what the name of the band/group was. I did hear that they had been going for 20 odd years and had a number called "God loves me but hates You!!" Great programme by the way.
