SAD DOES NOT HAVE TO MEAN BAD

Chris Evans | 12:50 UK time, Monday, 17 November 2008

Early blog, ...

... had to say goodbye to Enzo this morning.

He was supposed to come home last week but his condition, which had been acute for several months, became chronic last week.

I went to see him earlier today and he really was a dog that needs to be at peace.

One final walk and then it was time for him to go.

Lots of love .

CLP.

Ah Chris I'm so sorry to hear that. I guess we all thought that Enzo was on the up after such a difficult time. It's no comfort, I'm sure, but you did your absolute best for him and I'm sure his life was filled with love and happiness.

    Sleep deep Enzo.

It is a tough decision, but the animals let you know don't they. Whether its a look in their eye, a pitiful sigh or just something about their body language. They know when they are ready, and as owners all we can do is help them out.

I know you are gonna miss the fella, but remember he was a top dog and you gave him the best life he could have had.

    Chris & Natasha,

I'm so sorry to hear this and I know that Harry (my Smooth Fox Terrier) will be too. At least Enzo was loved by you both and well looked after during his illness. I'm sure he will be wagging his tail as he looks down on you both from that 'great dog kennel in the sky'.

    Lots of love

    Chirs,

That's a really tough thing to do. You have my deepest sympathies. I had to put my golden to sleep earlier this year and it is probably one of the saddest moments of my life. Saying goodbye to an old friend. It still brings a tear to my eye even now.

Enzo is in a better place. Your pain and sorrow will ease with time. Your happy memories will help you through this time.

    Hi Chris

So sorry to hear about Enzo, we too had to say goodbye to our very brave springer spaniel Thomas after 15 years this year, it was nice he was at home in his bed and not stressed at the vets, which we were grateful for.

It was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, but you know it is the right thing when it all sinks in in a day or so, no more suffering and at peace. Just remember the happy healthy times he had, like we did, thoughts of him running through fields on a sunny day!

Our love to you and Tash xx

    Christoff and Natasha,

Very sorry to hear the sad news Chris, most upsetting I know.
I had a German Shepherd (Garth) he was more like a best bud than a dog.
Broke me up when we had to have him put to sleep, and that was 15 years ago,his picture though has pride of place in the living room.
Still with me really I guess, condolences to you both.

    Chris

So sorry to hear your news, and thinking of you.

We had a cockatiel and he died just before Christmas in 2004. That year, we bought a very special christmas decoration to remind us of him, and every year when it comes out of its box to be hung on the tree we smile about Kong and his randy ways.

    Chin up chuck!

Some of you may already know this poem. Author unknown so I'm not infringing anyone's copyright. I think it's lovely ...

    Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends, so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigour; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together.

    Chris,
There is nothing I could possibly add to what others have already written, nor can I take away the feeling of loss! I can only say I know what you are going through, having lost 2 cats in the last 16 months both much loved pets! It's the love, care and time that you put into them that they reflect back double. In time the pain does ease but never goes away, you are always left with the memories of the good times, and these should be cherished!

Take care, and at the risk of upsetting some! Huggles to you and yours Christophe!

    So sorry for your loss.
I know how you must be feeling but once you get over the really sad times all you will remember are the good times.
We rescued a beautifull coker spaniel called Ben that had been mistreated as he had had testicular cancer as a pup and was no good to the breeders.
Although the cancer came back after 6 years we know that he had a good time and gave us tremendous pleasure.
That was 18 years ago and even now we have another rescued dog ( a Jack Russel this time called Eddie) I still think of Ben when walking in the woods or along the river bank of the times we did (even in the river sometimes).
Anyway time does heal and with baby on the way you will soon have your hands and thoughts full of other things, but the good memories will live with you forever.

    Hello Chris,

Oh poor Enzo- you mustn't be too sad though Chris, he’s had a good life here, he'll be in doggy heaven now, running wild and free, and having fun with all the other good dogs of the past while he waits faithfully for you. When it's your turn to walk with the Angels, he’ll be there waiting for you. On your arrival his ears will prick up, he'll bound over to you, jumping up putting his big muddy paws on your tummy-he'll knock you right off your feet just to let you know how pleased he is to see you.

    Have fun up there Enzo.

So sorry to hear your sad news Chris. I remember when I had to have both of my lovely old cats put to sleep within 6 months of eachother for completely different reasons. It broke my heart but it stopped their pain. Bob in particular was still fighting despite being skin and bone and unable to walk, he shouted at the vet just before he drifted off.

i'm really sorry to hear about Enzo Chris - but you are right when you say when you know the time is right to let them go. We lost our beloved cat a few months ago - Sooty - we had her for 16 years - she had a tumour and went downhill very quickly - but waited until my daughter came home from uni (they grew up together) before she let go and passed away.

Chris I hope that these lovely, caring messages give some comfort to you.

I told my mum about your post on the way home earlier and she was moved too. She had to have her little Benjy put to sleep a few months ago and she still cries for him now.

She felt guilty for getting a puppy a little while ago, said that it was as if she was replacing him. But I told that she still had so much love for a dog it would be a shame to waste it. And little Bobby is very loved.

As I type Betty, my elderly Basset is trumping away at my feet bless her! She keeps stealing the cat food, that'll teach her....not!

    Chris,

You have mine and Mrs PoolMan's sympathies. I personally dread the day that one of my cats falls badly ill and we have to take such a decision as you did. Like you said (pretty much) you can only go so far before it becomes obvious that its not in the animal's best interest to keep trying.

Chin up and thanks for a great show. Perhaps next time you have me on for a request, my van's CD player will behave for me!

Perhaps a little inappropriate, but it made me smile. I told the wee lass about Enzo. Here is our conversation.

    "What are you reading, Mummy?"

"Chris's dog died and went to Heaven honey, I'm just reading all the nice messages."

    "That's sad."

    Pause.

"Mummy, when my cats and fish die, I can get a dog, can't I?"

Trying not to laugh, "But that won't happen for a long time, and you will be sad when they die, won't you?"

"But, Mummy, they will be in Heaven with God and that means I can get a doggie, doesn't it?"

What can you say!?!? She has, I hasten to add, said this a few times - the way their wee minds work!!

Can I just reiterate what has been said before, I think it's amazing that folk have written such beautiful things. You are a unique bunch of folk, you bloggers and blogettes!

Susan that reminds of something that LM said round my mum's house yesterday.

Refering to one of her cats she said 'Smokey lives on chicken at the moment' to which LM piped up 'so Nanny is he sitting on the chicken now?

    Bless.

    Morning lovely people.

Chris, well done on a great show last night, despite your sad news.

Tiggs, when's your birthday then? We have to start planning the party!!!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!!

By the way, I agree with jothelawyer - Little Drummer Boy was fantastic. It's my mum's fave Xmas song of all time so guess what she's getting for Xmas???

Hope we all feel a bit happier today. My friend is having her final IVF treatment today, so any positive thoughts you can spare and send up to Liverpool at around 11 am would be MOST appreciated :-)

Just listening to Mr Wogan this morning, who was extremely complimentary about you, Christophe...

Amongst other things. he said (regarding Children in Need) that you acted 'over and above'.

You ALWAYS do, even in your times of sadness, and that's why we all love you...

    I second that emotion m'dear!

    My birthday is Saturday (41)!

Mentioned last week (i think) that Little Drummer Boy is my fave crimbo song, Tel & Aled do it really well too, it has to be a single! Tel did say it'd possibly be a double a, I'd've thought the other side would be Donald Where's Ya Troosers?

    Hi Hazel Love *91,
What did Sir Tog say regarding Christoff on his show Hazel, only I did not hear the show but sent Tel an email regarding little drummer boy with reference to Christoff and come dancing.
Just wondered if he read it out on radio this morning.

one of my bosses is coming in on Friday to see me - eeeeeek! Why do I always think it's going to be bad news??? Have taken out redundancy insurance just in case ha ha!

Anyway hopefully he'll be gone by the afternoon and then the party can start.

Obviously don't mean you can't start the party without me by the way! Just that I'll be able to join in.

Ahem. Glad to clear that up.

    Going now.

Chris. Hubby Paul and I heard about Enzo yesterday. SO sad for you and Natasha and well done you for such a good show, despite your pain.

Lots of things have been said already and while we agree that it was his time and how, after all he's gone through, we're not surprised, but none of it helps. We know. We went through this last year when we said "goodbye" to our beloved goldon retriever, Sam, the day after his 14th birthday. Someone sent us the Rainbow Bridge and that ALWAYS makes us cry. Someone else sent us Rudyard Kipling's, The Power of The Dog

There is sorrow enough in the natural way
    From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Buy a pup and your money will buy
    Love unflinching that cannot lie--
    Perfect passion and worship fed
By a kick in the ribs or a pat on the head.
    Nevertheless it is hardly fair
To risk your heart for a dog to tear.

When the fourteen years which Nature permits
Are closing in asthma, or tumour, or fits,
And the vet's unspoken prescription runs
To lethal chambers or loaded guns,
Then you will find--it's your own affair--
But...you've given your heart for a dog to tear.

When the body that lived at your single will,
    With its whimper of welcome, is stilled (how still!);
When the spirit that answered your every mood
    Is gone--wherever it goes--for good,
You will discover how much you care,
And will give your heart for the dog to tear.

We've sorrow enough in the natural way,
When it comes to burying Christian clay.
Our loves are not given, but only lent,
At compound interest of cent per cent.
Though it is not always the case, I believe,
That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve:
For, when debts are payable, right or wrong,
A short-time loan is as bad as a long--
So why in Heaven (before we are there)
Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear?

We do it because they love us; because there's a wagging tail when you come through the door - no matter how awful your day has been. Because a toy will be thrust at you as if to say "play with me, please" and though it can sometimes be annoying at the time, oh, how we miss it when its gone.

We won't say "chin up" because its right that you grieve for the loss. We will say that we hope the pain eases over time.

    Warmest wishes to you all
    Sue em All and Realwit
