Red Hot Chili Peppers - 'Hump De Bump'

Red Hot Chili PeppersOh what a RELIEF! If any band needed to try and spend a bit of time in front of a mirror working out what it is they do best, it's the Chili Peppers. After the monolithic weight of IMPORTANCE surrounding their 2-CD opus 'Stadium Arcadium', and a bunch of heartfelt, but slightly over-serious singles (with some REALLY drab videos), it was starting to look like they were suffering a terrible case of fun-depletion. Not so awful if you're, say, Keane, but this is the Chili Peppers...fun is their musical backbone. You could even say they're fun-da-mental...(sorry!).

So, seen the video yet? Isn't that a LOT better? I mean, they're mucking about, Anthony has bling teeth, Chris Rock is doing a cute little top-and-tail cameo appearance thing (he's the director too), there's a marching band, a lady hits John Frusciante in the face, Chad Smith plays a tin can, Flea's got his PE kit on, and there are tramps with trumpets (trampets, anyone?). This isn't just a promotional video for a band's new single, it's an EVENT.

None of which would be worth mentioning if the song wasn't the best party-on! bass-quake the band have put their name to since 'Give It Away', which it is. Oh sure, it fails to break any new musical ground for the band, it doesn't add to their range as musicians and it won't win around anyone who can't bear what they do. But, y'know, stuff all that. This IS what they do. And they're bloody good at it.

So, because it is sometimes better to shake your ass than stroke your injured soul, because it sounds like the biggest fun-rock band in the world are making an effort and enjoying it, because they even bothered to make a good video, there's only one score you can award a song like this, for fear of appearing a party-pooper. And no-one likes a party-pooper...unless it's a children's party and there are nappies involved, obv...

This is their most average single from the album. Its catchy, like but no way does it deserve 5 stars...
