Lemar - 'Tick Tock' (Cardinal Beats Retro Mix)
As a bit of a fan of Lemar’s recent contributions to the world of pop, I did the clever thing and bought the album. This is why I originally wondered if ‘Tick Tock’ is strong enough to stand alone, as a grown up singleton. Oh sure, it's a favourite on the album, with its playful swaggering and general cuteness, but as a single, maybe a remix would be the way to go?
Well, under normal circumstances, perhaps. Thing is, this is a relatively simple track, and in this case simple means GOOD. There are too many songs which are crammed full of so much stuff you don’t know what to cheer at or get angry with first. So Lemar makes it nice and easy for our delicate ears to enjoy. Which is always good, right?
RIGHT, which is why I got in a bit off a huff when I heard the Cardinal Beats version of ‘Tick Tock' . Why change a perfectly good thing? When you have a guy with a voice as velvety and yummy as Lemar, there’s no need to add anything that distracts you from it, like scratching, or people yelling "tick-tock you don't stop!" in the background. Bit of a waste of time isn’t it?
Luckily for him (and you - I had an even longer outraged rant ready to go) the original is also available on the single as well as other remixes. I might even go as far to say that the Future Cut remix is pretty darn good, with its emphasis on the twinkly piano accompaniment – very ‘Earth Angel’ from ‘Back to the Future’ - but if there are any other future remixes of the lovely fella planned, don’t push me, or THERE WILL BE TROUBLE.
