He had that socially annoying predicament of being sat inbetween the two people that were talking to him and having to negotiate between maintaining eye contact and not turning his head back and forth too much. It's a social minefield and I think Joe was aware of it... it's impossible not to be!
I hate that psuedo-relaxed interviewing technique... it doesn't work, it just makes the interviewee feel awkward.
