Hello Buckles and Garth (you two are always good together)

Great show today, and by show I mean show...that was not a big mix tape! However it would be the kind ot mix tape that I would very gratefully receive if it were a mix tape!

Some very fine music today...I particularly liked the piece by MOONDOG which was just lovely, and the CAN track MOONSHAKE - I bet Julian Cope likes that one :) The IRONED HEIDI FLEISS and DE LA SOUL tracks were great too!

Good to hear PARTY FEARS TWO by THE ASSOCIATES again, haven't heard that one for a long time. I think Steve Wright once said on his radio show "Could you imagine what a collaboration between THE ASSOCIATES and DEXY'S would sound like" hehe!

I liked Garth's 'name drop' story about Christine McVie, his mum sounds really cool. You should definitely check out some old FLEETWOOD MAC Buckles, you're missing treats like SHAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER, NEED YOUR LOVE SO BAD, and BLACK MAGIC WOMAN...all good stuff.

I agee with you too about wanting to own the object of a cd, however I wanted to own the object of SONG WARS VOL 1 with a booklet giving me lots of funny information etc.but unfortunately it was only available for download - Hmmmmm!

I wouldn't trust Keifer to get you out of a scrape...he may be incapacitated ; )

Great mixtape again, you always manage to have a perfect mix of chat, music (some I've never heard of, but that's fine, I like that) and giggly bits, and I always love it when you have Garth on.

I totally understand the UPPERCASE quirk, it's nice to have everything tidied up isn't it? Like the tins in the cupboard all facing label-forwards, cutlery all facing the same way in the drawer, computer mouse on the left of the laptop, that kind of thing.

I was glad to hear I'm not the only one who spends far too much time editing tracklists.
Though for me there isn't an easy one-button-click solution as I Only Use Capital Letters At The Beginning Of Every Word In A Song Title.

The amount of time I've spent editing tracklists is a scary thought. Usually it's because my last song doesn't fit on the CD and it's stupidly distressing to sacrifice one to get it finished. I missed the show but I'm now off for a wander round the city to listen to the podcast and try not to gurn too much when I want to laugh. Wish me luck!

While i don't understand or condone your obsessive capitalisation of tags, it seems a shame to know that you could be suffering in your endeavour, so your could try the program 'EasyTag', it's open source and free:


It has utilities to capitalise whole words or just the first letter, and can be applied to both the tags and the file name itself. I don't use iTunes or any Apple formats, but it says it supports mp4/aac...

For your info my city + podcast walk was mainly unsuccessful. It was the Arnold Schwarzenegger impersonation that did for me in the end. Headphones off, think about something really sad & serious, before people start looking....

Great podcast as ever! In the past, you have asked for listener suggestions for tracks to include in your BIG MIXTAPE. However, I was wondering if i could suggest a title and you provide the appropriate music instead. Just to shake things up!!

You mentioned on the podcast that you find the sound of a fan comforting when going to sleep, and that you accidently had passed this on to your wife. My brother was similar, in that he found it difficult to sleep unless he had some kind of music playing. This is something I inherited to a certain extent.

With that in mind, I'd like to suggest a mixtape called "Sleepy Songs" (though I will give permission for the title to be change if you think of something better!!!). Here are some of the tracks that help me drift off :-

What do you think? I realize that this topic is quite similar to the relaxation music show that you did a few weeks back, but also think that it is just different enough to warrant another look at some more chillaxing tunes!

Quick thoughts on a few song and Twitter.

I reckon Billy Mackensie invented Twitter. If you listen to the start of PARTY FEARS TOO, "I have a shower and then phone my brother up. Within the hour I'll smash another cup," As far as I can make out that's what most tweets seem to ocnsist of. Maybe I'm just a grandad but I don't get it, just like facebook. On his Radio Four show last week Charlie Bookers defence of Twitter was destroyed by a very witty Lee Mack rant. I think its been taken off Iplayer now but it was so funny I was listening to it every morning before going to my horrible job.
I do love PARTY FEARS TOO although I have strange way of looking at it. Bear with me on this one; when I was a kid I can vaguely remember a kids cartoon, similar to but not Captain Pugwash, that style of animation. It was sort of Knights of The Round Table kind of thing set in mediveal times. In there was a jester who narrated the story and played the lute & it sounded exactly like PARTY FEARS TOO!!! Please tell me someone else remember this and its not the tablets talking.
Good though PARTY FEARS TOO is, THE ASSOCIATES finest hour was the mighty BREAKFAST. A fantastic tune, the theme for an unmade spy film.

And talking about songs that sound like others anyone else feel that parts of that Neil Young tune sounds like TAP TURNS ON THE WATER by CCS? Yes? No?...... just me then.
Loved the R2D2 track, agree totally that its a real slow burner. The algerian track was very interesting as well. Don't think I could do a whole album but that track was terrific. And of course the mighty TUSK.

I love the show and have a couple of suggestions for themes for future mixtapes!
1. Remixes? perhaps a mix tape which features only remixes,my personal choices would be Blur's girls and boys remixed by the petshop boys and gorillaz's 19-2000 remixed by soulchild.
2. First record mixtape, you, your guest and any of the production team who happen to be around bring in the first song they ever bought.

Ideas for future mix tapes would be ANGRY music. This would be useful when preparing myself to ring someone up to complain, or to be played whilst writing and email displaying my disgruntled attitude to something. As let's face it I'm too nice/soft in everyday life to be any good at this as a rule, and need to get myself prepared, otherwise I end being the one who apologies ("sorry for ringing.." "I don't want to make a fuss..), and often end up achieving nothing.

Lovin the series thus far and your lovely guests!! In response to your capital letters bit, when i'm writing my blog over on blogger which i've called 'Its not a wind-up love, i really think like this' i generally only type in lower case unless i'm shouting ofcourse which sometimes has to happen right?! So this is interesting because i don't remember making a conscious descisiion to do this, i just 'was' doing this..i also do that thing where you type it so its reads how you would speak it-sorta like Irvine Welsh but knowhere near as intense and probly not that like him...really.

Also liking the titles to these tapes but not sure i'm looking forward to this break up type tape. Mostly because i was dumped myself a couple of months ago, though i think i'm well on the way to being over it. A track that particularly affected me (depressed the hell outta me) was 'Aint no sunshine when she's gone' which we play at work. I was also enjoying Nick Cave and the Badseeds during this period. But actually enjoying it, not just wallowing in it, love it when he mentions kittens ha ha.

I want to suggest the track 'Treason' by the magnificent Teardrop Explodes for this tape. It spoke volumes for me and i think it will fit in wonderfully whilst also bringing some, i imagine, much needed up beatness to the whole affair.

Was there a point where A&J could have been A&G in the early years? Or perhaps G&A. Garth's laugh suddenly reminded me of Ricky Gervais at one point, not the shrill cackle he (RG) has put the " ... EEeerrrrrr, uh-her" that comes at the end, like a sigh.

I feel like a right perv for saying this but Dr Buckles is looking very dishy in that picture. Woof.

Wow! The scribble on the tracklist really reminds me of a Bjarne Melgaard art piece! I think Garth and Adam has real potential as provocative artists dealing with violent, homo erotic content.

Wow, some Speedy J. Unlikely to hear him sandwiched between adverts for Tesco's on somewhere Bux used to work once upon a time. Up with this sort of thing. Garth may like to check out the LP by Locust - Truth is Born of Arguments, for similar oblique techno scratchings.

Party Fears Two - Possibly the finest intro in pop music, vying neck and neck with The Wuzmeister's Heroes, and the way Billy Mackenzie cries "AWAKE MEEEE!" alone validates the entirety of the 80s. I could hear it 1 million times and probably not hate it, and I'm usually someone who wants to set fire to, and blast perfectly decent (over)playlisted tunes into the next star system. This of course is an ultimate break-up song. Poor Billy; I hope the party's good wherever he is now.

The fan addiction interlude - reminds me of a framer abode where the neighbour's dog was sadly a bit mentalist and would bark apropos of nothing, sometimes almost literally til dawn. The owners must have been similarly barking since they seemed just cosy sleeping through the pandemonium. I on the other hand resembled a mad, bug-eyed scientist every morning, surrounded by fresh clumps of hair scattered around the bed. Until...I had the brainfit of switching on the loud but soothing fixed fan in the nearby bathroom, and leaving the door open. Whooshy-drone bliss trumps Demento Dog!

Even when the insane whoofing finally ceased months later, I needed the whoosh to sleep. I was like, todully hooked on that whooshy stuff man.

Looking forward to the further stalking adventures of Garth's mum when he makes his next appearance.

@Testa "3 Kilos - The Prodigy". Totally out of character piece for them, but this meisterwerk jazz drums the likes of Firestarter into Smartie smithereens.
