ART POP TAPE NAME AND QUESTIONS FOR GRAHAM LINEHAN

Post categories:

Adam Buxton Adam Buxton | 14:07 UK time, Friday, 28 May 2010

The Blog on the Tyne is all mine all mine, How's things Mix Tape friends? I'm alright. Bit hollow after the Lost finale. I was hoping they'd go for a brand new type of plot twist, but no. It was one of the big old stinky ones. I still shed a tear or two but felt a little dirty afterwards. Hey ho hoo ha.

Ìý

So I need mo help from you for the next Big Mix Tape, which we'll record next Tuesday 1st June (sweet baby Bieber, is it June already?!) The theme for this tape is Art Pop featuring the music of artists who are trying to do more with the medium than just sing a pretty song, yeah? Art school bands, avant gardists, pretentious ponces, they're all welcome as long as they're dipping their musical brushes in the pot marked 'choons' and not 'demented bilgewater', cos we've kind of already done that one. I'm afraid there's unlikely to be any Lady Gaga though, unless my guest trails any in on his shoe. Joking of course!

Ìý

The thing I need from you chaps is a good name for the tape. It's art pop remember, so it's going to have to be witty, snappy and cool! I think Witty, Snappy & Cool is what they should call the Rice Krispies characters to get more young people into them. I should really be in advertising. Hang on, that would make a great sitcom...

Ìý

So apart from a name, I need questions for my guest this week: the delightful Graham Linehan. Graham is currently perhaps the most successful TV comedy writer in the UK. At least I'm almost certain he is but I put the word 'perhaps' in there to give myself some wiggle room, but he's pretty flipping successful I think we can all agree on that. He's an ex music and film journalist, Poker fan, video game lover, Twitter behemoth and a keen amateur humanitarian. In the TV sphere he's the creator of the IT Crowd, co creator of Black Books, Big Train and Father Ted and has collaborated winningly with giants of comedy from The Fast Show team and Matt & Dave of Little Britain to Alexei Sayle and Chris Morris and that's just the tip of his magnificent iceberg. Did I mention he tweets a lot? OK, that's enough hyperbole. All questions for Graham will be garnished with a dollop of full fat Thanks.

Now back to searching the web for Lost explanations...

SONY THANKS & QUESTION FOR SHARON HORGAN

Post categories:

Adam Buxton Adam Buxton | 16:11 UK time, Friday, 21 May 2010

Blogwyn Pig!

Ìý

How are you? I am fine. Thanks for all your very kind messages of congratulation following our gold award at the Sony's the other week. Here's a picture of me with table buddies James Stirling (our producer of course), Jarvis Cocker and his 6 Music producer Alicia. It was the perfect night although Joe was very much missed. I said a few thankyous to listeners on the Smiles Davis podcast but thanks again to all of you who listen to our Saturday morning show for you contributions, encouragement and indulgence. I've said it many times before but the peculiarly funny and intelligent people that listen to the show have turned it into something much greater than the sum of our stupid parts and we're very grateful. Now back to Big Mix Tape business...

Ìý

We're recording the next Mix Tape this coming Monday 24th, the theme is break up songs and I'm calling it The Splits. This is one of those mixes you make for yourself on the whole unless you've made it for the person you've just split up with to make them feel bad by listening to the depths of your despair in musical form. My own experience of The Splits was nights of indulgent misery spent compiling tapes to soundtrack further nights of indulgent misery. There's nothing like a few well chosen portions of musical melancholy to dignify a bit of heartbreak. I'd be keen to hear any stories that you have on the subject, particularly times that you may have handled a split badly, whether you were the one that got dumped or the dumper, as long as the stories aren't too miserable. I don't really have the requisite sincerity skills to do Our Tune.

Ìý

My partner in heartbreak for The Splits will be the actress, comedienne and Guardian columnist, Sharon Horgan whom (correct use of 'whom' here?) many of you will know from the sitcoms Pulling and Free Agents as well as shows like Broken News, Charlie Brooker's You Have Been Watching and Rob Brydon's Annually Retentive. Any questions you may have for Sharon about her work, this week's theme or anything else will as usual be cherished and put to good use.

Ìý

Finally a big thanks to the lady (I think the signature on her card says 'Roo' not 'Poo') who handed me this CD mix at the other night. Hard to beat the beautifully made fluffy beard cover and the lovely touch of the green foil wrapper from a Viscount biscuit (the king of chill biscuits of course) on the spine. Great music on there too, most of which was new to me (Kyte, Babble, M83, Imogen Heap, Telefon Tel Aviv etc.) Especially liked The Operator by Barbara Morgenstern and will try to play it on a future show. Thanks Roo! All other mix tapes and CDs gratefully received.

NEXT WEEK'S GUESTS!

Post categories:

Adam Buxton Adam Buxton | 12:24 UK time, Saturday, 8 May 2010

Blog Soldiers

Thanks for all those Emmy The Great questions. I asked her a lot of them and I hope a good proportion of her answers will make it to the final edit. What a completely charming person Emma Lee was! It was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable shows we've done so far.

Ìý

Over the next couple of weeks I'm doing some filming for a TV pilot starring the comedienne Joanna Neary so this week we're going to record a couple of Big Mix Tape shows more or less back to back and once again it would be great to have your questions to put to my guests. On Monday we'll be recording a show with actor, writer, comedian and Twitter nabob Peter Serafinowicz. Peter always seems to have about 20 projects on the go. If he's not doing a TV show, he's got a part in a movie or he's filming a sketch for Funny Or Die with some famous American friend, or writing joke Tweets for his many followers or directing music videos for . In fact I've just decided he's a ponce and I'm going to have to give him an envious duffing. I'll do that before we record the show though.

Ìý

The theme for that week's Mix Tape is music that is in some way funny, either intentionally or not. Not all novelty and comedy songs basically, because that would be a little much, but a few, and some other odds and sods that are for whatever reason, chucklesome.

Ìý

On Monday night my producer James and I will be attending the Sony Awards as the Saturday show with Joe has been nominated in the comedy category. We're up against some heavy hitters so I'm not writing my speech just yet but I'll go along and stare at Chris Evans and embarrass myself trying to talk to Jarvis Cocker so that'll be fun. The next day we'll record another Big Mix Tape, and I hope my guest will be Liza Tarbuck who I last saw at Radio 2, shuffling papers awkwardly as the Modfather wished harm upon me. She hasn't said she can definitely make it but I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I thought she could help me put together a break-up tape.

Ìý

As ever, any questions for Peter definitely, and Liza possibly would be very much appreciated by Team BMT!

ROCK PAINT

Post categories:

Adam Buxton Adam Buxton | 10:20 UK time, Wednesday, 5 May 2010

Blogmanstars!

Ìý

I had a thought about new names for paint colours inspired by stuartmemo's post a while back about Beatles themed paint colours. I was going to abandon the new paint names thing because I was reminded that Marc & Lard used to do a very similar thing on Radio 1 back in the day but stuartmemo's Beatles twist reignited my enthusiasm. How about a Bowie paint range?! Go on, stop watching election coverage and do something REALLY important! here's a couple to get you going:

Secret Life of Azalea

Panic In Turqouise

Look Back In Amber

Fuchsia Legend

Ìý

Those are very bad. You have to be able to do better! HELP!!

QUESTIONS FOR EMMY THE GREAT

Post categories:

Adam Buxton Adam Buxton | 12:45 UK time, Tuesday, 4 May 2010

Bloglodites!

Ìý

Thanks for all your questions for Jon Ronson and your song suggestions too, they were all very much appreciated. Congratulations to Azrael (that a Smurfs reference?) who was the first to correctly identify the film clip in last week's show as being Brad Pitt doing his very odd Cherman exint in Seven Years In Tibet. You win a cheer and a nude jig. I am dancing and cheering as I type.

Ìý

This week my guest is, for one week only, NOT a white bloke around the same age as me! I'm delighted to say that instead the super talented singer/songwriter will be joining me to talk rubbish and contribute songs to a tape of mellow music, which I'm thinking of naming Chill Cakes. If you have any questions for Emmy, tips for compiling mellow/chill out tapes or anything at all you wish to share do please contribute below. As ever I will read all your messages with interest and sing with joy and gratitude as I do.
