'Law and Order' (pt 7/8) - The effects of underage drinking

Description

Alcohol can affect the body and brain. It can lessen perception and judgement. This has consequences for young people. A doctor explains how a small amount of alcohol can influence the ability of a young person to make decisions, which can then lead to everyday tasks resulting in injury. Alcohol has an impact on the decision-making process.

Classroom Ideas

This clip could be used to help students understand the risks and dangers of alcohol on young people. Students could conduct further research into the effects of alcohol on the body and brain. If possible, a doctor, nurse or other specialist could visit the class and answer questions.

Working in pairs or small groups, students could label an outline of a body to note all of these effects. Students could also be asked to consider how drinking alcohol can affect friends and family, and could explore the link between alcohol and anti-social behaviour.

Students could go on to write a diary entry from the point of view of Craig, outlining his thoughts and feelings at each step of the day so far. Is he really enjoying himself? If not, what else might he be feeling at this stage?
