An animated extract from the first chapter of ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. The Iron Man comes to the top of a cliff and falls to the beach below, breaking into pieces as he falls. His appearance is described in detail. Ted Hughes’ words form the narration and the story is illustrated using animation and sound effects.

Students could listen to the audio only and describe what they are visualising as they listen to the story. Students could note specific words and phrases from the extract and then describe in their own words what they imagine. Students could draw a picture of what they imagine. Once their pictures are complete, students could place them in paper frames and the write words and phrases on the frame. These could be words taken from the extract or ones students thought of themselves as they imagined the scene. They may not just describe his appearance but also infer things about his personality or behaviour. Students could share and compare their pictures. Students could watch the clip and compare their pictures with the animation.
