We're not actually there yet. We've not been there since 1958.

We were the most succesful Wales squad, getting to the Euro 2016 semi-finals but we didn't get to a World Cup. Just getting there would be a box ticked for Wales. If they manage to get there you're feeling a bit like we have a good chance.

Let's not get carried away but we can look at it with some optimism. There could have been a worse group.

We'd be happy to get to the World Cup, we have to be realistic, but anything can happen.

England defender Kyle Walker to Â鶹Éç Radio 5 Live: "Over the last two years we've come to adapt to playing every three days. Going into the World Cup a week after the last Premier League game works in our favour.

"We'll take each game as it goes, one step at a time and hopefully we can go one step further and win the World Cup.

"We know how to win and manage games now."

Martin Fookes: Is Gareth Southgate the luckiest England manager ever??? We can put the reserves out for the first couple of weeks of the World Cup.

It's a good draw for England. Iran are not a familiar team so lots of homework will need to be done. USA are great athletes and have stepped up a level massively.

If it's a home nation (Wales or Scotland), then it would be dramatic. Gareth Southgate will be delighted with the draw.

A World Cup is such a high-pressure environment. Lot of excitement, especially if drawn against Wales or Scotland.

  8. 'I'm excited to get started'published at 19:03 British Summer Time 1 April 2022

USA boss Gregg Berhalter to Â鶹Éç Sport: "We think it's a good group. Every opponent in the World Cup is difficult.

"With England it's an exciting match-up, Iran are a diverse opponent who did well in qualifying and then we'll have to wait to see our third opponent.

"Overall I'm pleased with the group and excited to get started.

We played Wales recently in a friendly, we know Scotland and then you're pulling for Ukraine naturally because of what's happening in the country.

"We [Gareth Southgate and I] go way back. He's a guy I look up to. He's always been there for me and given me advice. When I first took the job I looked to him as a mentor. I'm looking forward to competing against him.

"I just reached out to him when I got the job and asked would he tell me more about international football. And being the guy he was, he did."

Gareth Southgate would have taken that - deep down, without a doubt. He just can't come out and say it just in case. He's too professional to say it. He'll be more than happy with it.

England manager Gareth Southgate, speaking to Â鶹Éç Sport: "USA and Iran are teams we’ve not played for a while and the third is an unknown but throws up a possible British derby.

"We’ve got to get out of the group. Out first objective is to get out of the group and then we build from there.

"In this situation all of our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine, so when that tie is played out is irrelevant really.

"When you’re seeded you get the advantage of missing out on those big six or seven teams. Most of the first seeds would be pleased with the group they get. There are some highly ranked teams in pot two. The USA are an interesting one. They’ve got some very good players and we know what they could be capable of, so that one in particular is an intriguing one."

    England v Iran

England have never faced Iran in any senior international.

They have never lost to an Asian nation, winning five - including against Kuwait at the 1982 World Cup - and drawing four.

Germany are doing well under Hansi Flick. He has reenergised the national side which is important for football to have a powerhouse.

I think the Germans are good at bouncing back. It's rare for them to have two bad tournaments back to back - and they've got the players.

Spain have got some great young players. I hope Luis Enrique won't be too cautious if he gets Spain so far like he was at the Euros.

    England v USA

This is the third time England and the USA will face in a World Cup group stage (also 1950 and 2010).

It will be the first time England have been in the same group as another nation in three separate World Cup tournaments.

England have won eight of their 11 matches against the USA (D1 L2), but all eight wins have been friendlies.

The rivalry between France and Tunisia is a friendly one.

Lovely group. They've had some tough groups over the years but this time they start off against Saudi Arabia. They usually beat Mexico and they'd take Poland any day of the week.

Argentina could face England in the quarter-finals.

It's a little bit of "we'll meet again, do know where, do know when". Four years ago they played Serbia and Switzerland and were in the same group as Cameroon four years before that.

They'll certainly take that. None of those sides beat them.

From an English perspective it's whether they can play with the authority of being one of the favourites after the last World Cup and Euros.

It's a different level now, not only for Gareth Southgate but for fans and the media. If they can deal with that there's a great chance.
