Folk viola - more than just a big fiddle?
Lindsay and Friends
Lindsay (pictured middle) in broken string crisis
Sheffield's Lindsay Aitkenhead used to be a member of Tashbain - a group specialising in Jewish folk music (Klezmer) and traditional folk tales.

Now, however, it's just her, a viola, and friends.

Lindsay explains all:

"My current group and I are having problems finding a name - so at the moment we're just calling ourselves Lindsay and Friends.

"We play Klezmer and other jazzy music from the east of Europe and beyond.

What is Klezmer?
Klezmer is the secular folk music of the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe.

Its name is said to be derived from the Hebrew words "Klei Zemer" which mean "vessels of song".

"We've been improvising together for the last five years, and have performed all over Britain to appreciative audiences at festivals, theatres, pubs, castles and libraries.

"Ours is a flexible ensemble, but we're based around a core trio of clarinet, fiddles and bass guitar.

"A larger group of musicians is available for big events, and we're planning to launch an exciting new stage show at the end of 2003."

We hope to have some of Lindsay's music available to hear online soon - watch this space...
