A favourite song:

'Tu Vuo' Fa L'Americano' is my favourite Neopolitan song. It translates as 'You want to be an American'. It was written in the early 50's, and it's about a young lad who hasn't got much money. But he goes to the cinema and sees all the big American film stars. They all wear smart suits, smoke Camel cigarettes and they've all got a pretty girl on their arm.
He just likes this American scene. So he starts to dress like the Americans. He wears designer label trousers and wears a baseball cap in that particular 'American' way. He's just a young fellow and he's got to learn how to smoke cigarettes, and how to drink whisky and soda! But then when he drinks it, it makes him dizzy! Being short on cash, he's got to keep borrowing money from his mother's purse to do all this. Then when he's taking his girlfriend out for a walk, he whispers sweet nothings to her in American - of course she doesn't understand what he's talking about! So his pals say to him, 'You can't be an American, you're a Neapolitan!'

It's a very fast, upbeat, jazzy kind of song with lots of clarinet, guitar and double bass, and you can feel the sunshine in the lyrics. It's a great song to sing, it's a great song to dance to, and it's a great song to listen to because it's very lively!
