Surgery Closures, Wygston's House & Roger Begy
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
A second surgery is to close in as many months in one part of Leicester as the GP running it says practices like his are becoming "unviable" and "unsustainable." Dr Jonathan Lenton wrote to over 2000 patients last week, announcing that the Queen's Road Medical Centre in Clarendon Park would shut for good at the end of March. In a statement he told us that "in the current healthcare environment, small practices are becoming unviable, the workload has reached an unsustainable level and access to funding is becoming more and more difficult." But Dr Lenton's patients say they will try to fight the closure - and have set up a Facebook page and petition. 麻豆社 Radio Leicester's Khush Sameja has been finding out more.
Also, it's the oldest house in Leicester, and has been part of the city centre since the 15th century. But, Wygstons House could be about to take on a completely different guise. The Grade II*(two-star) listed former home of Roger Wygston - a wool merchant - was put up for rent last year and the council's announced its preferred new use. Jim & Jo nip out of 麻豆社 Radio Leicester and over Jubilee Square to Wygstons House to find out more.
And, he was Mr Rutland - according to the county's MP Sir Alan Duncan. Yesterday, Rutland County Council leader Roger Begy died in hospital in Leicester, having been diagnosed with cancer a few weeks before. He was 72. He'd led the authority since 2003 - but not before an impressive career in big business as our Political Reporter Tim Parker explains.
