Air Pollution, Beauchamp College & Christmas Lights
Start your day with the latest news and updates, with Jim and Jo at breakfast.
Almost 500 people in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are dying every year because of poor air quality. That's one of the findings from a report by Public Health England. It estimates that nationally more than 50,000 lives are being cut short because of pollution. Well now the road safety charity Brake is highlighting these figures to encourage people to drive less.
Also, a retiring Leicestershire secondary school principal - who is one of a small group of male black head teachers in the country - is encouraging everyone to follow their vocation, regardless of colour. Hugh Howe CBE, who's originally from Jamaica, will leave Beauchamp College in Oadby - and teaching - at the end of the academic year. It's after a successful 40 year career, which has included 21 years as a principal. Hugh is stepping down at a time when critics have highlighted staff shortages in UK schools at a time of rising pupil numbers. He's been telling 麻豆社 Radio Leicester's Kevin Ncube about his passion for teaching, and his determination that all young people should follow their dreams.
And, there may still be 31 days to go, but this morning our festive spirit has definitely kicked in after yesterday's events in Leicester city centre. Real reindeer in Jubilee Square, a giant Christmas tree, and thousands of twinkling Christmas lights which were switched on at 4.30pm on Humberstone Gate by Leicester's Lord Mayor Councillor Ted Cassidy. Both of us were hosting the main stage which saw some great entertainment including Leicester singer Hannah Boleyn, LA Bella Ukele and the cast of panto 'Snow White' with our very own Martin Ballard. 麻豆社 Radio Leicester's Monica Winfield and Ed Stagg were among the crowd enjoying the festivities.
