President Obama will nominate Janet Yellen as the next head of the US Federal Reserve. Also, a fire at a clothing factory in Bangladesh kills at least nine people.
President Obama will nominate Janet Yellen as the next head of the US Federal Reserve later today. The current vice-chair will replace outgoing Ben Bernanke in January. A huge fire at a garment factory in Bangladesh kills nine workers and injures many more, and Bernie Madoff is already behind bars for the rest of his life for a massive Ponzi scheme fraud - now some of his aides and employees are going on trial.
Plus, the European Parliament opens a packet of filter tipped measures aimed at stopping young people lighting up, including health warnings covering 65 per cent of all cigarette packets. Unsurprisingly, the tobacco industry is not happy. And, a rare Ming ceramic bowl, said to have been used by a 15th Century king, sells for more than $18m at auction in Hong Kong.
