  • A Hawker Siddeley 748 crashed while landing at Portsmouth airport. No one was injured.
  • There was relief as round the world yachtsman Alec Rose made contact with family. There had been concern following a distress signals heard the day before.
  • The Royal Family boarded the yacht Britannia in Southampton, and set off to the Scilly Isles for a cruise holiday.
  • Susan Bowater was crowned Miss Ventnor.
  • A teenage girl chained herself to the railings of Buckingham Palace, protesting at the Home Office plans to deport the pop stars The Bee Gees.
  • Oil was washed up on the beach at Hastings.
  • Discussions were underway for a referendum on the future of Gibralta's sovereignty.聽
  • Helen Shapiro and Duncan Wheldon announced their engagement.
  • Pearly Kings & Queens from all over London gathered in traditional costumes at St. Martin-in-the-Fields.
  • The roof of a London double decker bus ripped off as it went under a railway bridge in Margate.
  • A coach collided with a milk lorry in Midhurst.

  • Fire damaged the paddle steamer Ryde Queen. The former Isle of Wight ferry had been refitted as night club and was moored at Binfield.
  • Plans were revealed to re-develop part of Romsey town centre, including demolishing buildings in Church Street.
  • Britain has won the Admirals Cup after the 3 Hampshire yachts, 聽Moonshine, Yeoman XX and Marionette finished just ahead of the Americans in the Fastnet race.
  • The liner Windsor Castle left Southampton to sail to South Africa for the last time.
  • Local residents objected to plans to carve a white horse into Butser Hill near Petersfield.
  • A written off tug 'El Avant' set off from Southampton on an expedition to Antarctica.聽
  • Ambulance drivers in Poole were on an unofficial strike.
  • Portsmouth FC released a song to mark the start of the new season - with the help of the Southampton All Stars Orchestra.聽
