August 1963
  • The Duke of Edinburgh was one of thousands of competitors taking part in Cowes Week.
  • A record breaking 130 yachts set off from Cowes in the Fastnet Race.聽
  • A six million pound contract was awarded to Tyneside ship builders Swan Hunter and Wigham Richardson, to build two new mail ships for the Union Castle company.
  • Production was increased at the world's largest cable factory in Southampton.
  • There was bank holiday travel chaos for those heading south on the trains, after signalling cables were damaged after a fire outside Waterloo station.聽
  • The bank holiday was marred by wet weather.
  • A protestor scaled the new 500ft Post Office tower and unfurled a 10ft banner at the end of the crane's jib on behalf of the charity OXFAM.
  • The great train robbery took place in Buckinghamshire. 聽拢2.5 million was stolen in the raid on the Royal Mail service from Euston to Glasgow.
  • Museum and institution attendants were on strike.
  • At the age of 17, Claudia MacPherson became the youngest person to swin the channel

  • Britain's latest military aircraft - Hawker Siddeley Hawk was shown to public for first time at Dunsfield, Surrey.
  • 100,000 people lined the streets of Birmingham for 2 cycle races through the city.
  • Vehicles were hijacked & set on fire to protest against te 3rd anniversary of internment by the British Army in Northern Ireland.
  • Brendan Foster clipped 2.5 seconds off the world record for the 3,000 meters.
  • Nine Canadians were when Syria shot down a Beirut to Damascus flight.
  • The FA Charity Shield was between Leeds United and Liverpool.
  • There were roof top protests at Hull prison.

  • A judge was criticised for comments he made after a rape trial at Winchester Crown Court. He said it was not what he called "The more serious type of rape".
  • Lee Chapman made his debut for Portsmouth in a friendly match against Real Sociedad, which Pompey won 3-0.
  • The Fastnet race started in The Solent.
  • Some of the world's top professional cyclists left Portsmouth on the opening stage of the Tour of Britain.聽
  • More than 63,000 people were caught last year claiming unemployment benefit though they had a job.
  • It was feared that the Ukraine may be planning to gain greater control over nuclear weapons deployed there during the Cold War.
  • New drivers who commit motoring offences such as speeding could lose their driving licence and be made to re-take their test, under new government proposals.
  • Prime Minister John Major called for an end to the hostilities in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
  • A survey by the Consumers Association 聽found that nine brands of condoms they tested would fail new tests on reliability.
  • Complaints about British Rail reached record levels, according to the passenger watchdog group the Central Transport Consultative Committee.聽
  • The Bank of England said that Britain's inflation over the next year will be lower than expected.
