Filming Tibetan macaques in China (pt 2/4)
Hao Jian works for Sichuan Television, which has spearheaded documentary production on wildlife under the guidance of Ms Sun Jianying. She points out that rapid economic development is now threatening wildlife and the environment, so she hopes that her department's programmes will help raise public awareness of their protection and the risks that they are exposed to, such as tourism. Emei Mountain is also a popular tourist spot and the macaques in particular are a huge attraction. 'Monkey guardians' are appointed to oversee crowd control and make sure that the monkeys come to no harm. Hao Jian is concerned about tourism's impact on the macaques' habitat and he embarks on another film about the monkey guardians in an attempt to educate the public about the importance of animal protection.
