Singapore - an authoritarian democracy
In Singapore the same political party, the People's Action Party (PAP), has won every election for more than half a century.
We meet teenager Kylene, who has grown up in Singapore. She introduces us to her family and talks about what it is like to live there. She takes us to the national parliament, where she explains that because one party has been in power since the 1960s, Singapore is known as an authoritarian democracy. Kylene defends the system, saying people are happy with the government.
Professor Kenneth Tang, from the University of Singapore, explains that because of its power, the PAP has a significant influence over much of society, including the media and civil service.
