Single Transferable Vote
Scotland uses a Single Transferable Vote (STV) system to decide their local elections. This proportional voting system is explained at a c茅ilidh dance in Edinburgh.
One of the dancers acts as a voter, he is able to choose any number of candidates from any party, and rank them in order of preference. The candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their supporters can transfer their vote to one of their other selections. A graphic then shows what the House of Commons would look like if MPs were elected using STV (based on the results of the 2005 General Elections).
