A Bosnian refugee's story

When the former European country of Yugoslavia broke up in the early 1990s, a war broke out in Bosnia between ethnic groups - Serbs, Bosnians and Croats. 100,000 died and two million people were left homeless.

Sometimes, when a country is clearly dangerous, the British government will grant people escaping the violence refugee status. This gives them the automatic right to stay in the UK.

Aldiana was just 4 years old when her family fled from Bosnia as refugees. Her father was left behind, and spent several months in detention camps in terrible conditions. Aldiana returns to Bosnia to discover more about the war and why her family had to escape as refugees.
