France's Burqa Controversy

With several European countries now considering banning Islamic face veils in public places, Claire Bolderson reports from France, the place where heated debate over the burqa, or Niqab, began.

The French President Nicolas Sarkozy ignited a firestorm when he declared that the burqa or niqab "was not welcome on French soil". Since then, a panel of French politicians has recommended a ban on the full veil in all schools, hospitals, public transport and government offices. Assignment investigates why the full face veil has become a flashpoint in the debate over how far France should go to integrate it's population of nearly six million Muslims. Claire Bolderson reports for Assignment.
