In 2010, there was nothing in Khorgos. The place didn't exist - it was an expanse of sand dunes that ran up to the bases of the snowcapped mountains. In seven years, the $250 million colossal dry port - the Khorgos Gateway - has sprung from the desert. Strategically situated on the China/Kazakhstan border, it's become one of primary dry ports for handling trans-Eurasian trains travelling between China and the UK. But it isn't just a train station and a few warehouses, they've created a new city - with some developers claiming they're building a "new Dubai". It is part of a network of similar development areas that stretch from China to Europe along the 21st Century Silk Road.
