Aldeburgh Festival 2024: Bruckner's 7th Symphony
Ryan Wigglesworth and the 麻豆社 Scottish Symphony Orchestra perform Bruckner's epic Symphony No 7. They are joined by Alban Gerhardt in Unsuk Chin鈥檚 magnificent Cello Concerto.
One of Bruckner鈥檚 most popular symphonies, the Seventh opens with a theme which he apparently heard in a dream 鈥� and it proceeds on a grand scale, with a seemingly ever-unfolding melody, and bold sustained climaxes which contrast strikingly with moments of serenity and playfulness.
And composed especially for Alban Gerhardt, Unsuk Chin鈥檚 Cello Concerto has been described as 鈥渢he biggest and most ambitious... and arguably the most important concerto for that instrument to appear since Lutos艂awski's in 1970. The solo writing pushes the cellist 鈥� the superb Alban Gerhardt鈥� to the limits of the possible."
During the interval, there will be music selected by Aldeburgh Festival composer, Dame Judith Weir.
