Episode 2
Amy teams up with Kirsty, who, as a girl, was an aspiring dancer but gave up her dream when she lost her confidence due to losing much of her sight. 13 years on, she is ready to dance again.
Amy returns to her hometown of Caerphilly. She’s there to surprise Kirsty, who has no idea husband Tom has contacted the Strictly pro. Tom has asked Amy to teach Kirsty a special dance to surprise friends and family at her upcoming birthday party.
Growing up, Kirsty aspired to be professional dancer and trained in performance art at university. Kirsty has rare genetic condition Startgardt disease, which meant her eyesight deteriorated significantly while at university. It knocked her confidence so much as a performer that she felt compelled to abandon her dream. But after 13 years and with Amy’s support, she is ready to return to the dance floor.
Among the party guests will be Kirsty’s mum Trish, who has been her biggest champion from when she danced as a girl until now. She has no idea Kirsty is preparing to perform in public for the first time in more than a decade.
With just four weeks to go, Amy gathers her A team. Having never worked with a partially sighted dancer, Amy gets tips from pro Karen Hauer, who danced with Paralympian David Clarke for a Sports Relief special. She finds the perfect partner for Kirsty in European and British Latin champion Loyd and calls on close friend Carlos Gu for a last-minute boot camp to master the tricky steps and lifts ahead of her big night.
The dance knowledge Kirsty built up over years gives her an advantage, but it won’t be easy as she fits a demanding rehearsal schedule around a full-time job and family life. When the moment arrives, will Kirsty have the self-belief to pull off the glittering performance she’s worked so hard to achieve? Lights, music – it’s time to find out!
