A high number of Category 1 emergency calls puts the North East Ambulance Service and the hospitals in the region under relentless pressure.
Filmed in early 2022, this series follows the North East Ambulance Service as the region struggles to bounce back after facing one of the toughest times in its history.
In control, the team feel the pressure as four Category 1 calls are received in the space of just ten minutes. Hospitals across the region are beginning to experience significant delays. At James Cook Hospital, crewmates Jo and Julie are one of eight ambulances waiting to hand over their patient. With the hospital at full capacity, they are told to expect that they will wait for between two and three hours.
Crewmates Chris and Becca are dispatched to their first patient of the day - a man with leg pain. On the way to hospital, the patient becomes emotional as he recalls tales from his early life in Durham, courting his wife, who has now been diagnosed with cancer. Becca provides a dose of musical medicine as she plays the patient his favourite song.
Halfway through the shift, an emergency call is received with reports of a high-speed collision, persons trapped and a patient in critical condition. Chris and Becca and the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service are immediately dispatched to the scene. Twenty miles away, Jo and Julie are dispatched to another Category 1 emergency. A five-year-old boy has fallen from a quad bike.
