Spain is one of the biggest meat-eating countries in the world and there has been a backlash from the country’s farmers over the comments while large-scale farming has been criticised for its environmental impact. Annabel Maclennan reports from Italy on the country’s declining birth rate and whether recent government initiatives will be enough to reverse the trend.

Spanish farms
In Spain, the Minister for Consumer Affairs, Alberto Garzón, wants the public to recognise the impact of megafarms on the environment, and encourages people to change their eating habits. Spain is one of the biggest meat-eating countries in the world, and the calls to limit meat-consumption has faced a furious backlash, not least from leading politicians.
Many farmers feel their livelihoods could be jeopardised by a reduction in meat eating, with some political parties saying that the state should not have a say in the population's eating habits.

Birth rate in Italy
The decline has resulted in the Italian Government introducing the Family Act. This is a new Act that aims to encourage people to have more children. It includes a universal payment, changes to maternity leave, tax breaks and improvements in childcare. Will it be enough to reverse the pattern of decline that Italy has been experiencing for years?
