Sudan's Women: Raped for Protesting

Catherine Byaruhanga investigates claims of a systematic effort to silence Sudan's women after increased reports of rape, assault and sexual harassment by security forces.

Sudan's women are at the forefront of the country's pro-democracy movement. In 2019, months of peaceful protests led to the fall of Omar al-Bashir after 29 years in power. But in October 2021, army generals staged a coup removing the civilian prime minister and cabinet.

Today, women, men and children have once again mobilised to end military rule. Yet, there are increased reports that women and girls out protesting are being raped, assaulted and sexually harassed by security forces.
