Chagos: The Lost Archipelago

Andrew Harding reports from the Chagos Islands on a long-awaited homecoming, as former islanders sent by the government of Mauritius arrive back.

In 1965, Britain took control of the Chagos Islands from its then colony, Mauritius, and evicted the entire population. The United Nations' highest court says Britain's occupation is illegal, and now, 50 years later, a boat of former islanders sent by the government of Mauritius has arrived back. They are the first people to step foot there without a British military escort, and without seeking British authorisation. Andrew Harding reports from the archipelago on a long-awaited homecoming.
