Wildlife expert Nick Baker embarks on an exhilarating adventure through Japan's Wilderness to experience the deep respect the Japanese have for the natural world and to see what makes Japan's landscape so unique. Nick's journey was partly inspired by his friends, fellow naturalist Steve Backshall and Olympic gold-medallist and rower Helen Glover, whose winter visit to Japan took them through six of the northern provinces. Nick sets off in autumn, sometimes by bus, sometimes on foot and, inspired by the upcoming Japanese Olympics and Paralympics, he even gets on his bicycle, to discover dramatic landscapes and meet some deeply inspiring Japanese people. His trip takes him to the plains of Miyagi, famous for its spectacular migratory birds and up the volcanos of Fukushima to meet the guardians of a hot spring. As the Japanese mark the tenth anniversary of the 2011 tsunami, Nick meets people still rebuilding their lives after the disaster; he takes instruction from a master in the ancient Japanese art of bonsai and he travels to the mountains of Yamagata to visit a famous sake brewery and follows the story of its relaunch in 2021.
